Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Kendrick.
Hi Ashley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been selling real estate for almost 20 years. I started right out of college with a chance encounter at an apartment building my dad was living inside on the Plaza. They were converting it from apartment to condos and I hit it off with the Developers who are now lifelong friends. They needed help due to high condo demand, and I ran the office for almost 5 years learning from amazing mentors on how to sell real estate and run a company. I went out on my own after 2008 crashed and have grown my business year over year since focusing on both owner-occupants and investors in Kansas City.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Real Estate is never smooth. I think that’s part of the fun is being able to adapt to the changing markets and technologies. Also – you don’t make a living overnight and so much of it is a commitment to relationships and learning how to run a business rather than living transaction to transaction. I started paying myself a salary early instead of cashing in my big commissions for mindless spending. Also detaching from the things, you can’t control in this industry is important. You can get lost in wanting to please client emotions – and bringing that home to family/friendships. I’ve learned that boundary setting is not the same as not caring.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a full-service real estate agent and also an investor. I’ve always put my money where my mouth is – and instead of investing in stock markets that I’m unfamiliar with I stuck to investing in Kansas City. Over time my wife and I formed a fun side business of renovating and selling or renting homes for our retirement purposes. We have made great relationships with contractor teams which is also an asset to my regular job of selling buyers’ homes. I’m one of the few agents in Kansas City that has experience in both departments and I’m fortunate to have a wife with a design/creative eye that also helps with listing my clients’ homes. I’ve learned how to talk about return on investments, and brand as both a Realtor and an Investor. We also specialize in mid-century design and I’ve started selling more of that style in Kansas City. It’s a part of my brand and uniqueness.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My family. My kids and my wife. They come first all the time for me and I have realized that the happier I am in my “Mom” role the better real estate agent I am. I want to give my clients the best service but I know that starts with keeping myself healthy and happy. I love to mountain bike on the side – and that’s my meditation time. So, ultimately, I’m living my dream life because I know I can give quality time to my kids and my wife, and friendships.
