Check Out Emma Olmedo’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Olmedo.

Hi Emma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I began my floral journey working in a retail floral shop. By no means was I a “family prodigy” or floral expert- I knew I loved to be creative and this seemed like a good outlet to “give a shot”. Shortly after, I came to the realization that I absolutely loved floral design and everything that it encompassed. To work with such a beautiful and fragile product and be able to create something unique every day was the exact outlet I had been searching for! After learning the basics of design and slowly progressing in my skill, I decided I was ready to venture out into the events industry. I had previously designed a few “small” weddings and loved creating such special designs for someone’s wedding day- I knew I wanted to do that more! I emailed many Kansas City event floral design companies to see if anyone was hiring and began freelancing for several of what I would consider being some of the city’s top floral companies. I am still so grateful to all of those who took the chance on me, especially considering the little that I knew about event design at the time. I learned so much and got my hands on so many beautiful flowers. In 2018, I became a mom to my daughter, Rosie, and decided that I needed a change of pace yet again. I dreamt of opening my own business but it wasn’t until this time that I decided to take the leap. I signed up for a local wedding show and things took off from there. In my first year in business, I designed 20 weddings and have continued to grow since! I have been able to work with the most amazing couples, create relationships with many wonderful vendors and venues, and have designed arrangements with thousands and thousands of flowers over time. I currently work out of my studio located in Blue Springs, Missouri, and send hundreds of flowers out of my doors on a weekly basis for weddings all across the metro. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I would be where I am at already in my business and I owe that all to my family, friends, clients, vendor friends, and to The Lord!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unfortunately, this business hasn’t always been smooth-sailing for me. As a single mom, I started Floriography to allow myself the opportunity to balance work and mom life. With that, there have been many challenges of keeping up with all of the work encompassed in business ownership while making sure to set aside undivided time to be with my daughter. Of course, 2020 was no walk in the park either. I had about 25 weddings on the books for 2020 and over half of those had to either cancel or postpone into 2021. This means that the income I initially planned for was either revoked or spread out into 2 year’s time rather than 1, meaning that my 2021 income would also be less. I think that there are always challenges that come alongside business ownership and I’m sure there are many still to come. I am grateful for the opportunity to face those challenges head-on and to say that I’ve made it through when it’s all said and done!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in custom, luxurious wedding floral designs. Every couple I design for receives designs unique to them and no two weddings are created alike. From bouquets to centerpieces to over-the-top floral installations, we dream big and follow through with exquisite attention to detail and the freshest of flowers.

I pride myself in a very intimate client-vendor relationship that prioritizes customer service. I take on a very limited amount of bookings each week and month to ensure that I’m fully available for my clients from the first consultation until their wedding day is over. Wedding planning is a very emotional, very big task and it’s my goal for each and every couple to feel excited about their floral designs and confident in my ability to design their wedding. I love to hear my clients’ wants and needs and then be available as an expert in the industry to “fill in the gaps” where needed. Ultimately, when their wedding day comes and they finally see all of their florals and decor, my hope is that they say “Wow! This is exactly what I had envisioned my wedding day would look like and more!”

How do you think about happiness?
For me, happiness comes from being with those I love. I have such a wonderful support system who have been with me throughout this entire journey. My parents, grandparents, and siblings have spent countless hours helping me with wedding prep and listening to me talk business even when I’m sure they’re tired of hearing it. My favorite thing to do is to spend time with my daughter. She is my other half and we have so much fun exploring the world together! She even joins me at my floral studio on occasion and has delegated herself little “jobs” to do alongside me.

My job brings me so much happiness and fulfillment as well. I can honestly say that, although it’s hard work, I absolutely love what I do! The people I get to work with, the creativity I get to have- that is my happy place. I mean, how can you not be happy when you’re constantly surrounded by the most beautiful flowers?!
