Meet Philip Marinello

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Marinello.

Hi Philip, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been listening to podcasts since 2009 or so and always enjoyed the format. You get a couple of people together who have a good rapport, are knowledgeable and passionate about a topic, and BOOM you’ve got a podcast!

Looking back, The Substance had been brewing for several years before Trevor and I originally launched it. He and I have literally been lifelong friends, I don’t even remember meeting him. Our parents were in the same circles and we “met” as babies and have been friends ever since that was a concept that we understood. We went to church together for more or less our entire lives and have logged several years together at the same schools as well. In fact, that’s what brought us both to Kansas City almost a decade ago. We both came here to attend a local seminary.

Eventually, Trevor also got into podcasts and we started talking about how there aren’t many high-quality shows in the Religion/Spirituality category that are both genuinely thoughtful and theological, but also compassionately and intelligently engage important issues that come up in everyday conversation. We started brainstorming and decided on a variety format. One week we’ll be answering listener questions and doing short segments on a Topic Toss Up, the next week we’ll be talking about the questions a well-made movie raises in a Substantive Cinema show, then it might be an interview with an author or artist or someone who’s working to better the world and their community. The goal was and is to have something for everyone’s interests but also to introduce our audience to thoughtful people and topics that they might not come across on their own curated feeds.

The show launched in January 2019, ran for 12 episodes and after an unplanned year and a half off we relaunched in September of 2020, along with our third co-host Vincent Edwards, and have never missed a week of publishing. We’ve got around 60 episodes out and a good blend of topics and guests. Some of our more notable guests include hip-hop artist and Co-Founder of The And Campaign, Sho Baraka, Founder, and CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute, Robert P. Jones, Senior Culture Reporter and Film Critic for Vox.com, Alissa Wilkinson, and New York Times bestselling author, Jemar Tisby. Subscribe and follow to be the first to hear about what we have coming up!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles we’ve had as a show was the unintended year and a half off, which we address in our “Special Announcement” episode between #12 and the relaunch at #13. Other than that, it’s just been with the amount of time we can actually put into the show as independents who are working in building up our supporters and sponsors.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work in sales and am known for being a networker and connector around KC. I’m most proud when I make a quality connection that brings value to everyone involved. One of the things that set me apart is that I understand that real success is about being consistent with good processes and I’ve got the patience to continue executing until I get the results I’m looking for.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Huge! And it usually comes after I find a person who can help me and just ask 🙂
