Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane ORoark.
Hi Shane, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I entered public safety work in the mid 1980s as an Explorer Scout. At 18 years of age, I became a police dispatcher. At 20 years of age, I entered the Kansas City Missouri Police Academy and became a KCMO Police Officer. Later I started my own security company in 1999 and sold it in 2000 for profit. A little over 10 years ago I start another security company that exists today, Homeland Security Protective Service which is the third-largest independent private security company in the Kansas City region. We specialize in security patrol, fixed-site guards, alarms, and video monitoring. We provide service to the entire KC metro area with about 80 employees serving private and government customers. www.homelandsecuritykc.us. I am still serving as a police administrator and entering my 28th year in commissioned law enforcement.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always struggles in owning your own business. Most of the time you have to “make” things happen. They are not automatic. A business owner must have desire and energy. They must also be creative to a degree to be a bit different than the competition. It is a struggle to build a company because there are many factors. We have struggled in the past trying to obtain customers and keep them, recruiting employees, and showing them the right direction, which is a constant struggle still.
We’ve been impressed with Homeland Security Protective Service, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Homeland Security Protective Service is a police officer founded, owned, and managed. We provide private security protection to customers who require support to watch assets and prevent criminal activity. We provide armed and unarmed uniformed security officers.
We have built our reputation on providing fair and liability-free services. We understand our restrictions and authority in order not to place the customer in a situation that could create liability. We are supplemental to traditional police services and we have the ability to provide additional services for a client that they are unable to obtain from a government police agency.
Most of our higher command staff are retired law enforcement professionals with decades of credentials.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I own three businesses so I do not have a lot of extra time to research and develop, which sounds bad. I rely on my supervisors to run daily operations. However, I still play a large part each day that requires work and attention.
