Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Frets.
Hi Trevor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a professional videographer, photographer, and licensed drone pilot, but my background is Theatre. I have a BFA in Acting from Texas Christian University (TCU ’15). I’ve spent most of my life on stage and behind the scenes learning the art of storytelling. In addition to creating videos, I also direct musical theatre. While most of my competitors studied at film school, I taught myself how to use a camera and edit videos, which I think gives me an interesting perspective. I bring my knowledge of Theatre to how I use a camera and edit content.
I grew up in a family that traveled a lot. My dad made a home movie of every trip and every life milestone – a real high-quality movie. Because I was surrounded by this, I always played around with cameras and editing. As I got older, especially in my college years, people constantly asked me to film and edit videos for their school organization, their event, or their business. I fell into this job. I never planned on doing this. It found me. One day, I realized I was so busy with this side hustle that I needed to form a real company and pursue this career. And I love it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting off is scary, but I had consistent business at the beginning. The pandemic put things on hold, and it’s been a bit of a roller coaster to get back to that consistency.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart from others is my specialty in aerial photography and the way I incorporate that. I love to mix shots from the air with shots from underwater. I like to go from a wide shot into a close-up. I use antithesis to tell my stories. I imagine my videos as stage musicals. I “choreograph” my video clips to music because that’s the world I came from. I also like to edit off the beat right when the viewer has gotten comfortable to the musical and visual pattern. Keeping the audience engaged the entire time is important to me, even if it’s for a 30 to 90 second commercial. I use these ideas in everything I do: weddings/events, real estate, travel, and marketing videos.
