Inspiring Conversations with Jason York of Summit Salon Academy Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason York.

Hi Jason, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began in medical sales after graduating from Mizzou. After meeting my partner, who is an accomplished cosmetologist, we decided to open our own salon and thus the journey began. I fell in love with this industry because I loved seeing people turn a passion into a livelihood. We now own our 3rd salon and medical spa, which covers more than 6k square feet in the River Market area of Kansas City and we employee over 45 people. In 2019, we were planning to expand The Glam Room Salon and Beauty Bar into its second location when our consulting company, Summit Salon Business Center, planted the idea with us about effecting change in our industry at the student level. If we can train students some of what we are training at the associate level within our Salon Company, we will elevate our industry, so we purchased our first Cosmetology and Esthetics school in June of 2019. The school has been a large undertaking, from completely remodeling the building to an overhaul of the curriculum that is used by our educators.  It has been a huge challenge but a challenge we embrace.  The biggest reward I can ask for is seeing our students graduate and go make a difference in our industry. Our school is growing, and we are working everyday alongside our employees to better our programs, our training and ultimately our student’s experience. Our goal is to provide today’s students with the tools and knowledge they need to exceed all of their goals they have for themselves and their family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With any new company comes new challenges and growing pains but with every challenge, we get stronger. With every challenge, we get one step closer to reaching a goal we have set for our students, our employees and our company.  I’m extremely proud of our employees and students who overcome and make it happen every day.

What are your plans for the future?
We plan to bring in a barber cross-over program, nail program and evening cosmetology and esthetics programs to our academy by 2022 to better meet the needs of future students.
