Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Redmond.
Brandon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Redmond Renovations is a remodeling company where our motto is “Transforming Houses into Homes.” It was started back in September of 2017 and wasn’t official until July of 2019.
Let me tell you about the time I put a whole in the wall and no, I didn’t run into the wall, and I wasn’t drunk either. We had a traditional style home living room, family room, dining room, and kitchen and we needed more space for the new addition to our family. My wife was six months pregnant and instead of nesting the nursery, we were nesting our house. Now at the time, I wasn’t a contractor but I had a basic concept of building from my dad. I came home from work one day and told my wife I’m gonna put a hole in the wall and she was like ok. So I put a hole in the wall and from there, Redmond Renovations were created where we transformed our house into our home for our baby.
I got started simply by remodeling my house. At first, I was unsure about doing it because I didn’t think I could. I always thought I’d leave that work to the “professionals” but I told myself why not. The worst thing that’ll happen is I mess up and have to pay someone to fix it. I took that attitude into it and fully remodeled my home.
After I remodeled my home and saw how I did, my friends told me I should start my own business. I have a degree in business management but no one ever told me to own my own business. It was go to school, graduate, get your degree, and get a job. That’s exactly what I did after college. I was a Customer Service Rep for four years. It wasn’t until July of 2019 I took a leap of faith and I quit my job on Friday, July 26, 2019, and had my first full house remodel the following Monday, July 29, 2019.
In the midst of transitioning to a business owner in February of 2019, I met one of my mentors Kira Cheree who was offering an entrepreneurship class called EBB (Entrepreneur Business Basics), where my eyes were opened to being an entrepreneur and owning my own business. Kira gave me the tools I needed to go out and “aim high,” as she always tells me and run a successful business.
As of today, we’ve been in business for almost two years. We’ve completed 20 remodels along with some other general construction repairs. We are looking to expand and grow our business. We are MBE, SLBE, and DEB certified. We are nominated as one of the five finalist as a top contractor in the Kansas City area by The Kansas City People’s Choice Awards on August 8, 2021.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So far, I’d say it has been smooth sailing. More homeowners are in the running for small-owned businesses. Being a black-owned small business has had its perks as well, seeing how everyone I come contact with is looking for that. Also, we get a lot of referrals by word of mouth and social media so that helps a lot. The only struggles we’ve faced is manpower. Being as I do mostly everything myself. I have a couple people I sub out work to being as I haven’t gotten a crew of people on board just yet. Hopefully, in the future, that changes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Redmond Renovations delivers quality work as promised. We document our projects before, during and after because a picture is worth a thousand words and we focus on developing excellent relationships with our clients. What sets you apart from others?
We are a small business and we focus on the direct needs of the customer and we make sure the customer is with us step by step to make sure the customer feels they’re being heard and to ensure a quality job. We want the readers to know we are a family-owned small business who focus on the transformation of turning your house into a home.
What makes you happy?
My family. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My wife is the driving force behind me doing what I am doing today. If it wasn’t for her, I would have never step out of the “norm” to do what I’m doing today.
