Conversations with Audrey Kuether

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Kuether.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started blogging in March of 2012 to share the affordable updates and projects that my husband and I were doing in our outdated home. One of my favorite projects was our $500 DIY kitchen remodel (https://www.ohsolovelyblog.com/500-diy-kitchen-remodel/), which was featured in print in a Better Homes and Gardens magazine. I was so surprised they found our kitchen, let alone featured it! It was a defining and exciting moment!

From then on, I kept blogging and sharing our projects with my audience, and over the last almost decade, my blog has grown quite a bit. It’s been featured in quite a few national and local publications and TV shows.

Six years ago, my family and I bought a major fixer-upper home and we’ve been busy gutting and renovating it (mostly DIY) ever since. I’m so proud of the progress we’ve made on a small budget. I’ve featured all of the project tutorials on my blog. My favorite project was our DIY kitchen gut and remodel. It took us more than two years to complete, but the cost savings were definitely worth it! It’s been such a surprising and amazing adventure, and I’m so happy I decided to start the blog!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I do have a full-time career as an Art Director for a software company, so my blogging time has been limited to evenings and weekends.

It’s been a little tough balancing my blog with my full-time job and family obligations, but I’ve found a way to make it work. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with all the blogging deadlines and to have to sacrifice lazy weekends and fun events, but I’m not complaining. 🙂

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been artistic and creative my whole life and since pre-school, I knew I would make a career out of it. I’ve been working in the professional design field for almost 20 years and I love it, but I also love blogging as another creative outlet.

When I was in middle school, I remember telling my mom that a dream of mine was to do creative or crafty TV segments, and in 2014 I unexpectedly began that journey. I was contacted by a producer at KCTV5 News and for almost seven years, I did live DIY segments (as well as some segments at Fox4). I had a blast and was sad when Covid brought all in-person segments to a halt. I hope they bring them back someday soon!

A couple years ago, I was contacted by Hometalk TV to do monthly pre-recorded DIY segments. My eight-year-old daughter Vivienne and I love doing segments together. My husband Ted is our cameraman. It’s pretty makeshift but so much fun! I’m mostly just proud of myself for my work ethic – sticking with my blogging and TV projects even when life gets busy and hard. I’m also so happy that Vivienne loves to join me. I’d love to continue to do TV if it all works out.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I rely on the Adobe Creative Suite for all of my blogging and graphic design work. It’s a must! I love WordPress for blogging, Yoast for SEO assistance, Instagram for community connections, and Pinterest for inspiration.
