Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian West.

Hi Christian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From an extremely young age, I was always fascinated with music. I would hear songs on the radio and sing them exactly how I heard them. My mother always knew I had something special and she would try to get as much singing out of me as possible. When I started elementary school, I was very quiet about my talent and nobody really knew what exactly I had to offer. Out of embarrassment of what people would think, I held my voice in. Eventually, middle school came along and I was told by my parents and grandparents that my voice is too great of a talent to waste so, I signed up to be in choir and honor choir. Taught and sponsored by Francie Sipes. This was the turning point in which I was inspired by Mrs. Sipes to really break out of my shell and sing in front of my fellow colleagues. Although I was brought out of my shell, I was still fearful of what people would think.

As high school rolled around, I feel as though maturity led me to care less and less about what people thought of me. As my high school years went on, I started to experiment with writing my own music. Finding beats on YouTube to write lyrics to and recording voice memos on my phone of melodic ideas. I recorded my first song ever in a makeshift basement recording studio on January of 2019. Since then, I’ve built my own recording studio in my house and recorded hundreds of original songs. When TikTok began to take the world by storm, I started to post singing videos daily on the platform. I wasn’t getting a lot of traction in the beginning but, eventually one of my videos went viral amassing over 920,000 views and 200,000 likes. My most recent viral video amassed 3.4 million views and nearly 1 million likes. Through posting many viral and semi-viral videos, I have amassed around 100,000 followers and an amazing fan base. With all of this recognition through TikTok, I have been approached by many record labels and a handful of nationally recognized singers/songwriters/producers whom I have collaborated with.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I definitely struggled with the fear of what people would think of me and my singing abilities. Everybody needs to pursue the things they love. With a little confidence, the world turns into a vast opportunistic place.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer/songwriter. I write and record original music. I also post covers on TikTok where I have amassed over 87,000 followers as over 1.7 million likes. When I write songs, I write music that I like. The biggest mistake any artist can make is trying to write music to please a crowd. I always write to please myself.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I really enjoy how everyone is very accepting and kind. There is a lot of talent everywhere in KC and the support for everyone is endless.
