Daily Inspiration: Meet Sandra Segers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Segers.

Hi Sandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am the owner and creator of The Frosted Swirl Bake Shop. I have always loved creating and baking and six years ago, those two worlds collided with the simple question from a friend “Have you ever thought of making those fancy cookies?” The answer was a quick “No”.

…but I was curious.

I scoured YouTube and became obsessed. In High School, I had a job in a bakery and would occasionally have to write ‘Happy Birthday’ on a cake so I figured this will be easy! You all know how wrong I was. With lots of failures, YouTube tutorials, and practice I’m a self-taught cookier.

After moving to Kansas City, Missouri in 2015 a neighbor stalked her Facebook page. It took that one friend, who was a KC local that worked in a hospital with a police officer husband who seemed to know everyone in Kansas City. From that moment on, I’ve been steadily working creating cookies averaging 20 dozen a week.

Today I make cookies full time. I’ve found a balance between family, work and volunteering. I’ve been married for 25 years to her best friend and we have two daughters. I’m passionate about my community and volunteer while serving on multiple not for profit board of directors. You’ll find me on my computer designing cutters so I can play with her 3D printer, designing cookie sets and thanking that friend that asked her about those “fancy” cookies.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first started, I was living in Charleston, South Carolina. In a rural area and business was not booming! I started with cupcakes, cakes, scones, cookies-I baked anything I could sell! And in the meantime, I practiced decorating sugar cookies. Our move to Kansas City is what allowed my cookie business to soar.

Covid was another obstacle. Not only were events being canceled at my busiest time (graduation season is as busy as Christmas) but flour, butter and sugar were hard to get or being limited.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a cookier. I make decorated sugar cookies for all types of events. From weddings, showers, birthday parties, graduations to promoting your business with your logo on a cookie. I have the best clients! 90% of the time they tell me the theme of their event and let me just create. Or they’ll send the invitation and I go from there. I also have a 3D printer and can make any shape into a cookie cutter. Currently, I’ve been asked to be a core instructor in Orlando at an event called CookieCon (yes, it’s a thing). I will be teaching 900 other cookiers how I consistently create 20+ dozen each week. It’s this September and I’m very excited and a little nervous.

I think I’ve finally come into my own. I can look at a theme and bring in different elements to the design. I like to have my clients stare at their cookies and see the little touches I’ve done to make their event special. These cookies are definitely labor-intensive and I really want to make my client happy.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Kansas City! I’m originally from St. Louis and lived in Charleston SC before moving here and Kansas City quickly became home. I like the small town feel in a major city. I can’t think of something I like least about Kansas City. Maybe, that there are no beaches close by!
