Hidden Gems: Meet Kawtar Ben Elmaslouhia of Tagine House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kawtar Ben Elmaslouhia.

Hi Kawtar, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Morocco, Rabat. I came from a large family and grew up watching my grandmother and mother, not only creating the most delicious food but witnessing and truly feeling the passion, the love, and the pride that goes with every Tagine. I came to the United States ten years ago and settled in Kansas City, MO with my husband and two children. After working for several years in the insurance and health data management fields, I finally decided to follow my passion for Moroccan cooking and culture.

Once I moved to Kansas City, I fell in love with the diversity of the many restaurants here, so I knew I had to introduce an amazing Moroccan experience to the people of Kansas City as well. This is when I launched my own catering business in October 2019. I wanted others to experience all the passion and love that Moroccan Cuisine offers. Not to mention all the robust and exquisite Flavors that go into every dish.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As every new business, there are many challenges and obstacles that any founder needs to overcome.

There are many regulations in food industry, but I was so lucky to meet so many people that offered me all the help I needed from starting my business to where I am today.

Finding a professional kitchen was one of my obstacles at first, fortunately, I met Xander Winkel at the Ennovation Center, who offered me a space I could rent out for an amazing rate, not to mention the priceless advice that helped me to reach my goals in no time.

Moroccan cuisine takes a lot of time of preparation. I have to go to the kitchen multiple time (sometimes). I have to get things ready before.

During Covid, I had to pivot my business and I focused on private dinners. I now also offer Moroccan furniture rentals.

One of the challenges is that Moroccan cuisine takes a lot of time of preparation, so the cost is often higher than normal catering services. But my clients understand and appreciate that.

I’m past the proof of concept and now looking to establish my business permanently.

We’ve been impressed with Tagine House LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tagine House is owned and operated by women and offers catering services that specialize in authentic Moroccan food for all occasions. Whether you want a unique experience for yourself or the whole family, we can make any occasion a special one to remember.

With classic Moroccan hospitality, you will be served with an explosion of flavors. Whether it is the slow-cooked beef or chicken tagine or our fluffy mouthwatering couscous, we offer a menu that can be customized and for a smaller party, can be made right in front of you!

Most of Moroccan food is vegan and vegetarian ready, as we accommodate dietary restrictions on demand.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck plays a part in business success, but in order to be lucky you have to be there in the first place… Of course, nothing is more important than planning, strategy and having a great idea, but generally speaking I would say successful businesses realize they’re fortunate.”

I was so lucky to meet many people in my business journey. Without them, I wouldn’t be here today.

For example, in the beginning of the process of starting my business, I went to Kansas City Public Library to speak with an adviser about how I can take my business to the next step. In the end of the meeting, I was asked to cater two events at Kansas city public library!

For anyone overthinking their goals in life, my advice for them is to stop thinking and start doing, because you will be amazed on what this universe has for you.
