Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Moore.
Hi Samantha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started looking into doula work after I had my second child. My birth experiences were night and day because I had the support of a doula for my second. I decided to get certified when she was about a year old and jumped in as a solo doula right away! I love doing this work. When I moved to Kansas City, I chose to work for an agency in the area and was able to expand my skills and cue into what I truly love. After that agency moved on, I worked again as a solo doula which eventually turned into too much work for one person to do. I decided to open up My KC Doula because I saw a need in the northland specifically and wanted to offer something that I hadn’t seen before.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! Finding doulas who understand my mission and have similar belief systems was difficult at the start but when that clicked into place, we were rolling! The pandemic put a quick and frustrating halt to my business and the work I was able to provide for the women that work with me. Owning your own business is a huge roller coaster of emotions so trying to focus on what I CAN do at a certain time is how I try to move forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
A birth and postpartum doula is a person who cares for the well being a mother and her family during the birth of their child. We work with families during their pregnancy as well as birth and postpartum. Most of our clients give birth in the hospital but we also attend many births at our local birth center and births that take place in the home. Postpartum care is also a very popular service that we have. We attend the new mother and her family at home during the weeks and months after their baby is born. Basically, we are there to pick up the slack so to say. We fold laundry, do dishes, make sure the atmosphere is calm and serene so the family has time and energy to take care of their baby and heal. We also offer lots of support and can help the new parents navigate how to care for their new little one and have the emotional and physical support that so often is needed when caring for a newborn. One of our most popular services is overnight care. We tend to the baby and home while the parents get a full night of sleep, helping them to recover so that they can be fresh for work or caring for their family during the day. I’m most proud of our ability to serve so many families with our team. We have set up a scheduler that allows us to have many people working at the same time for multiple families. I love knowing that the families in KC are getting the care that they need and deserve! Some people call us the baby whisperers and I would say that is a very true name! We can help your baby come into the world in a calm, peaceful and empowered way as well as help you continue having those feeling throughout your postpartum experience!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
My hope is that the service will become more popular. With the timing of people having children later in life and their parents maybe no living nearby, the need for care, support and education in regards to child rearing is huge. We want families to go into parenthood knowing that they have a support team on their side! I would love to see our industry grow and more families able to have the support they need!
