Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Jackson.
Hi Shelby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for esthetics and actually went back to school at the age of 28 to pursue my dream in esthetics. I was working full time and going to school in the evenings and weekends and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made for myself. The esthetics industry is certainly my passion and my calling- such a rewarding career. I graduated in 2020 with my associates degree in esthetics and my esthetics certification then I worked under a wonderful esthetician for roughly three years before I decided to pursue my dream of owing my own esthetics business.
Opening Bare Skin Esthetics was not an easy journey. I actually opened BSE when I was just a couple months pregnant. Growing a business and your family at the same time, certainly has its challenges and my business would not be where it is without my husband, family and my incredible clientele supporting me. I worked all the way up till my daughter was born and she ended up coming 3.5 weeks early and being born by c-section which was not planned. That in it self was challenging and I had to be back in the studio a week after an unexpected c-section to keep my business running to full-fill orders. Once again, my husband and mom were there to help during this time and I couldn’t thank my clients enough for working with my schedule during this period. Navigating a being a new mom and a new business is a lot but so incredibly thankful for it.
A wonderful opportunity came available right before BSE turned one. I decided to move BSE to leawood inside of Haven Salon Suites. This has been a huge blessing. I’m surrounded by other women who lift each other up and the owner, Mandy, is a gem in this industry and deeply cares for her tenant’s personally and I’m grateful to be apart of Haven Salon Suites. My husband built out my suite to make it feel feminine and luxurious and it’s truly my dream, it’s so beautiful and relaxing for facial treatments.
Since becoming a mother myself to my daughter, I have developed this whole new meaning for caring for other moms in the KC area. This past spring, I decided to host “girl walks” to bring moms and women together in the area. I had noticed I kept having a similar conversation over and over with different clients. Majority of them were new moms like myself and they were saying how it can be hard to find new friends in this new chapter of life. I mean this from the bottom of my heart, my clients are one in a million. I have become friends with many of them and so many of them were there for me when I became a mother myself and I am so grateful for them. With that being said, I thought let’s bring all my clients together. I began hosting these “girl walks” for all women- kids/ no kids bring your pets or just bring yourself. My intention is to grow a community and help my wonderful clients meet other women and know they are appreciated and always welcome. BSE does continue to host these walks typically quarterly. Bare Skin Esthetics gained a new esthetician this summer, Brianna! It’s an accomplishment of hard work to be able to grow my business. Brianna is a wonderful addition to the BSE team. She is incredibly passionate, driven and compassionate. I am honored to have her and excited to watch her grow.
Some days I feel I need to pinch myself cause I’m incredibly grateful to be where I am. It certainly was not easy and still is not easy. I will continue to learn how to navigate and grow a business and learn how to juggle motherhood, family, friends and work. I like to remind myself that no one really has it figured out, and us moms and women have each other. I absolutely love owing a small business but it is incredibly challenging at the same time. Not only am I an esthetician, I’m a business owner and it’s very important to me that BSE has an incredible and supportive work environment & continue to give clients the best experience, result driven and for clients to love their BARE skin. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating motherhood and a small business has been my biggest struggle. The guilt of working when I’m home with my daughter and then physically being in the studio. Then feeling guilty again for not being in the studio more and putting more of myself into the business. Also, I’m an esthetician and I did not go to school for business. Learning the business side is a journey in it self and of course continuing my education in esthetics. This industry has endless knowledge which incredible. There truly is not enough time in the day and I’m currently working on how to juggle it all and give my best to everyone especially my daughter and husband.
