Today we’d like to introduce you to Allegra Kincaid.
Hi Allegra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Like most professionals, I credit my education for providing a strong foundation for my career. I was fortunate to attend Notre Dame de Sion High School, then continue on to the University of Notre Dame for my undergraduate education. I made a major pivot in my undergraduate years–my plans to attend medical school evolved into plans to attend law school! After some great conversations with experienced attorneys here in Kansas City, I came back home to attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. My career began in the trust industry, where I spent thirteen years at an independent trust company in Overland Park. During that time, I had the privilege of collaborating with some of the best fiduciary professionals, investment advisors, accountants, and practicing attorneys, both locally and across the country. In my trust career, I worked with high-net-worth individuals and families, business owners, beneficiaries of all ages, and individuals with special needs. In 2026, I decided to transition to the private practice of law, and joined my husband Matthew Kincaid at Kincaid Law KC, LLC, where I will focus primarily on estate planning and special needs planning. I have expertise working diligently with clients to preserve their legacy, protect family members with special needs, and keep family bonds strong. My time on the fiduciary side also gives me a distinct advantage: I can anticipate what language an estate planning document needs to avoid a disconnect between the client’s wishes and the interpretation of the documents.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t be where I am now if the road had been smooth! As a law student, I enjoyed a broad range of topics, but my gut told me that the courtroom, as exciting as it sounded, was not where my career would begin. I explored numerous different avenues trying to find the perfect fit, and by the end of my third year, I was genuinely worried I would graduate without a clear career path. It wasn’t until I was studying for the bar exam that I came across a job posting for trust administration, and I immediately realized it was the ideal fit! More recently, when I decided to challenge myself professionally and transition into the drafting side of estate planning, I had to confront the risks of entrepreneurship head-on. I grew up around entrepreneurs and am married to one, but taking that step yourself is still a leap of faith, and I have a new appreciation for just how much courage and initiative it takes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kincaid Law KC, LLC?
Kincaid Law KC was established in 2016 in Leawood, Kansas. Our primary practice areas are business, real estate, trademark, and estate planning. The firm has a strong reputation for providing high-quality, personalized legal services to small businesses, entrepreneurs, families, and nonprofit organizations. We pride ourselves on being innovative, reliable, and responsive. Serving Kansas City, Leawood, Overland Park, and the greater Johnson County area, we help clients across both Kansas and Missouri with business formation and contracts, real estate transactions, trademark registration, and estate planning tailored to their goals. What sets us apart is that we are a family business that combines deep estate planning and trust experience with robust, full-service business, real estate, and trademark counsel under one roof. Our Kansas City clients come to us for one need (forming an LLC, buying a property, or registering a trademark) and stay with us for everything from succession planning to protecting a loved one. That continuity allows us to address the whole picture rather than a single transaction.
Our comprehensive, personalized approach is exactly how we find solutions that might be overlooked if we were exclusively focused on a singular practice area. Every client’s situation is unique, but I have learned that you can always build on prior experience and employ a bit of creativity to obtain a great outcome. One of my proudest moments was suggesting a 1031 exchange–a strategy that lets an owner defer taxes by reinvesting the proceeds of one property into another–inside a first party special needs trust, which is a trust funded with the assets of an individual with a disability in order to protect his or her government benefits. It was an ideal tax-deferral strategy for the trust’s rental real estate, and the properties identified as replacements were strong investments in the local market. I had never personally seen a 1031 exchange done inside a first party special needs trust before, but I had recently completed one for another client and realized it presented a high-value solution in this situation, too. The client and his family were thrilled with the results! Because I have seen so many trust and estate scenarios come to fruition during my career, I am able to put that experience to work for my clients’ benefit.
Brand-wise, we are proudest of our reputation for education and transparency. Clients consistently tell us they finally understand their legal options and their fees, and that trust is the foundation of a firm that Kansas and Missouri families and business owners return to year after year.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Every job has a learning curve, some steeper than others. Even when you are confident and have expertise, chances are that you will run into challenges and snags along the way. The most valuable thing you can have in those moments is good people in your corner. Both Matthew and I have been supported by colleagues and mentors in our careers; a great example of that was when my transition into estate planning practice was enthusiastically celebrated by many former coworkers, industry peers, and professional connections across the country. I even had one former colleague ask to be my first estate planning client! Those cheers of support were so appreciated and gave me momentum in my new career path. Early on in your career, start building a network of people that you respect, admire, and support. It can begin in your own office or organization and branch out over time. You will quickly find that relationships are invaluable in the business world, and it feels good to celebrate each other’s successes.
