Daily Inspiration: Meet Green Kanvaz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Green Kanvaz.

Green, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey as an artist started long before I started making music. My parents were musicians and visual artists as I grew up. I’ve always been a creative person, especially through visual art. In high school, I wore green almost every day and eventually became known as “Green” or “Mr. Green.” Later, my best friend, Jalil Sharrieff gave me the name “Green tha Kanvaz Snatcha” because of my connection to visual art. Over time, I shortened that name to Green Kanvaz, and eventually it became my identity as a music artist too.

I started making music as another way to express the things I couldn’t always put on a canvas. My music is heavily influenced by my experiences, relationships, imagination, and the city and culture around me. I like creating worlds with my music and visuals rather than putting myself into just one box or genre.

Over the years, I’ve continued building Green Kanvaz into more than just an artist name. I see it as a creative universe that connects music, visual art, storytelling, fashion, and eventually other forms of entertainment. I’m still growing, still learning, and still building, but everything I’ve done so far has been leading toward creating something that feels completely like me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest struggles has been trying to build my career independently without always having the financial resources, connections, or support that bigger artists have access to. There have been times when I’ve had to put projects on hold, work with very limited budgets, and figure things out on my own.

Another challenge has been balancing being an artist with being a father and handling the responsibilities of everyday life. Finding the time, money, and energy to consistently create can be difficult.

There have also been plenty of moments where I questioned whether I was moving fast enough or whether people were seeing the vision. But those challenges have also pushed me to become more resourceful and creative. I’ve learned to do more with less, keep developing my skills, and continue building even when the circumstances aren’t perfect. I’m still on that journey, but I’m proud that I’ve kept going.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a music and visual artist focused on creating experiences that combine music, art, storytelling, and personality. As Green Kanvaz, I make music that pulls from my real-life experiences, relationships, imagination, and the world around me. I’m especially passionate about creating visuals and concepts that give my music its own world instead of simply putting a song over a music video.

I’m also a visual artist, so I naturally think about my music from a visual perspective. I’m constantly developing characters, artwork, music, merchandise, and larger concepts that connect back to the Green Kanvaz identity. My goal is to eventually build that into a larger creative universe that can exist across music, fashion, animation, gaming, and other forms of entertainment.

What I’m most proud of is that I’ve continued building my vision even without having a huge team or budget behind me. I’ve learned how to create, problem-solve, and bring ideas to life with the resources I have.

I think what sets me apart is that I don’t see music as just music. I see it as a canvas. I’m an artist in the literal sense, and I want every song, visual, character, and piece of merchandise to feel like it came from the same world. Green Kanvaz is ultimately about creating something that people can hear, see, and feel.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice is to start before you feel ready. Don’t wait until you have the perfect equipment, the perfect team, the perfect budget, or everything figured out. Use what you have and learn as you go.

I wish I understood earlier how important consistency is. It’s easy to get discouraged when you put something out and it doesn’t immediately get the attention you hoped for. But building a career takes time, and every song, video, performance, connection, and lesson is part of the process.

I’d also tell new artists not to be afraid to be different. It’s tempting to look at what everyone else is doing and try to fit into what seems to be working. But your unique perspective is one of the most valuable things you have. Figure out what makes you *you* and build around that.

Most importantly, don’t let a lack of resources convince you that you lack potential. Sometimes you have to be the artist, manager, marketer, designer, videographer, and everything else until you can build a team. Keep creating, keep learning, and keep finding ways to move forward.
