Today we’d like to introduce you to Tevin Mitchell.
Hi Tevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Tevin Mitchell or often people refer to me as Coach Tev. I’m a Personal Trainer in the KC area. The “Coach Tev” program has a motto that I stand by daily “Outwork Everyone”. It’s a mindset that reminds myself and my clients to go out there and be the best and not let anyone outwork you. For example, If someone asks for 10 reps in a set I’m going to try and push it to 15-20 reps just to one up the competition. It’s all in friendly competition of pushing yourself. My passion for fitness started from being an athlete all my life. I knew from the time I was 12 years old I wanted to be a personal trainer and an entrepreneur. After having a hamstring injury as a collegiate track athlete my worldview changed. I wanted to dive deeper into strength & conditioning and injury prevention for athletes one of my mentors at Cowley Community College-Gage Munson helped me do so. He gave me the Essentials of Personal Training book and quizzed me daily on muscle groups and how they function. After transferring to Emporia State University in January of 2017 I got the opportunity to work with Emporia State Track & Field as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach. Learning and being mentored by former head coach Steve Blocker was an experience of a lifetime. I learned methods from him that I use with clients to this very day. I had the opportunity to pour into these athletes and be a resource to help them improve their athletic performance. After college I started personal training at Hallbrook Country Club. My mentor Marqueita Rush taught me more of the business side of the fitness industry and how to put myself out there as a businessman. Reaching more than just athletes and gain experience working work with the general population. Learning these skill sets from her made me level up in the fitness industry. Working with both athletes and the general population helped me become more diverse as a trainer because now I can train just about anyone. Whether you’re an athlete or a beginner I want to work with you. My goal for the future is to grow my online training business and network with as many people as I can. So maybe one day I can have a gym to call my own. As for now I just want to help people be the best version of themselves!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road in this industry. The struggles of learning the market and demographic of the fitness industry can take a while. Being a young trainer you want to just train and have great workouts people like. So you forget to understand the business side of fitness.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Personal Trainer. I’m most proud of the clients I work with reaching their goals and helping them be the best version of themselves. What sets me apart from other trainers is I care about my clients and I see them as more than just a paycheck. I care about them as people first.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Marqueita Rush-Mentor. Helped me understand the business side of the fitness industry and how to create a lane for myself as an online trainer. Marqueita also took the time to sit down with me and taught me the sales part of personal training.
Caroline Garrison-Social Media Manager. Caroline helped me jump start my social media page for my online training. All of my videos and graphics she creates and does an amazing job with my marketing.
Steve Blocker-Mentor. I learned under former head coach Steve Blocker as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach- Emporia State Track & Field. He gave me an opportunity to be around athletes again. I was able to shape my skills in strength & conditioning for athletes during my time there
Gage Munson-Mentor. Gage handed me the book The Essentials of Personal Training. In college I was always talking about how bad I wanted to be a Personal Trainer. While working at the front desk of the gym at Cowley College Gage was the Director of Fitness/Personal Training. He knew I had a passion for this. He gave me a book and quizzed me and taught me about each muscle group daily.
