Inspiring Conversations with Jacey Fischbach of True Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacey Fischbach.

Hi Jacey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am the eldest daughter. I have five younger siblings. Growing up, I lived between two homes. My lunches in school were free. My new clothes and shoes went on layaway at K-Mart. My family were not strangers to mental health issues, addiction, and abuse.

I am a first generation college student. I worked full-time and attended school full-time. I paid for my first semester of JUCO out of pocket. I was proud of myself, but I didn’t know how I was going to pay for the next one. I cried in the financial aid office when they told me about student loans.

I am a Social Worker. I studied at KU and earned my Bachelor’s degree in 2016 and my Master’s degree in 2019. After several years of non-profit work, I wanted to make a deeper impact. I started my practice in 2021, right in the middle of the pandemic, on a total leap of faith.

Today, I run a thriving helping business working with teenagers and adults in my community. I am a proud mother of two young boys and I never miss an opportunity to enjoy a live band.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can’t even tell you how many challenges I have faced! So many. But I will share a story that inspires me. Almost 10 years ago, I saw something on the internet from a woman named Jen Dziura, describing a conversation she had with her 3 year old daughter after she expressed that she wanted to be an astronaut when she grew up. Jen told her daughter that she needed to study hard, go to college, learn a lot of science, and take a fitness test. Her daughter replied, “that’s just four things.” So from that moment forward, I have tried to always approach any challenge or obstacle in my life like a 3 year old girl 🙂

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am super passionate about working with people with ADHD and other neurodivergent struggles. I am currently working on becoming an ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP). I use a variety of talk therapy methods to inspire positive cognitive and behavioral change, with a focus on how this can impact your relationships.

I believe that establishing a trusting relationship with my clients is imperative in maximizing growth. I embrace the tough conversations and I honor the uncomfortable emotions that may come along. I’ve learned to get comfortable with discomfort. In the discomfort is where change can happen, and with change comes growth.

Being trusted to hold some of people’s most vulnerable moments is one of the greatest privileges I’ve experienced. Every now and then I still have to pinch myself. I want to send out a thank you to everyone I have had the honor of knowing in this space, and everyone I have yet to know. I am so grateful.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I am excited to continue supporting my community. I do not think AI will replace the therapeutic relationships that clinicians of my generation have worked so hard to build. Therapy has a come a long way. I think there is always room for improvement, but I must say, few things beat the feeling of a warm cup of coffee in hand, a comfy couch, and a safe space to be truly you.
