Today we’d like to introduce you to Forest Kinsey.
Hi Forest, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was a kid, I made myself a promise: to one day be both an animator and a paleontologist. Since then, I’ve got a degree in Biology and produce films and comedy productions in Kansas City. That’s pretty close, I’d say.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenge of the creative is that there’s always going to be something in your life more operantly important than your art. Survival outweighs expression, which is why so many potential amazing artists are unable to pursue their craft. I’ve battled to balance life’s priorities, some times more successfully than others.
To this effect, I’ve grown and developed good logistical skills. I’ve gone from writing and performing in a handful of productions a year to planning executing 10+ live shows, an equivalent number of filmed pieces, and organizing and operating an independent cooperative studio with a trusted group of talented peers. Plus, I still make time to celebrate every day with my amazing wife.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I best known as a filmmaker and comedian, although I am a writer, theater director, and illustrator. I have been successful at the KC Fringe Festival, a leading annual theater fest; for my film production work this year, I was presented with the Outstanding Video Award- in previous years, I was awarded Best of Venue, Best Original Script, and Audience Choice accolades. I am a 2-time runner-up in the Pitch KC’s Best Local Filmmaker award, and have built a small reputation in the local film festival circuits, including the KC Underground Film Festival and the Bird Watching Film Festival.
I am proud of my film work, but also to be the co-director and head writer for The Anarchy Fun Time Show, KC’s longest running monthly sketch comedy show at The Bird Comedy Theater, which I run with Cody Lindenberger. I am proud of my work with and for internationally touring musician and comedian Danielle Ate the Sandwich, and with local indie darlings ManaShark Productions and IX Film Productions. I am a founder of DNP Studios, KC’s newest indie theater, film, and comedy producing cooperative.
My style is crafty and quick. I enjoy taking topics funny on a surface level and wringing every last joke out of them, aided by tight editing, absurd visuals, and engaging physical performances. I hope to grow these skills in every piece I make.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Persistence, especially in the face of over-scheduling. I feel I have a strong creative voice because the projects I work on all end up having a similar tone and quality, which is nice. I am a strong supporter of the concept of “Good Enough.” If a piece, whether that be one for stage, video, visual art, etc. is able to achieve its intended effect, then you’re done; I don’t believe in perfectionism (something I’ve grown away from) but instead believe in hard work and clear ideas.
If a piece achieves what it sets out to do, it’s a success, no matter the degree.
