Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr Crystal J. Davis.
Hi Dr Crystal J., can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story has unfolded in layers.
I began my professional journey in higher education, where I learned early that leadership is not just about position. It is about presence, service, integrity, and the ability to help people become more fully who they are called to be. That understanding eventually became the foundation for CJD Consulting Solutions, LLC, the leadership development firm I founded to support individuals and organizations through servant leadership, executive coaching, organizational development, and transformational learning.
For many years, I built the work quietly and consistently. I taught. I trained. I coached. I wrote. I supported doctoral learners. I walked alongside leaders, managers, students, and organizations as they navigated growth, uncertainty, transition, and change. Over time, I began to see that my work was never only about leadership training. It was about helping people come back into alignment with their values, their voice, and their purpose.
That realization has brought me to where I am today.
This season of my journey is about embodiment, visibility, and movement-building. I am no longer simply doing the work. I am giving deeper language, structure, and sacred intention to the work I have been living for more than twenty years.
Through my emerging Sacred Reformer™ body of work, I am building a leadership ecosystem that brings together Lead From Within, The Within™ Model of Leadership, S.E.R.V.E.™, and The Amplified Leader™. These frameworks reflect different dimensions of the same calling: helping leaders transform from the inside out, serve with integrity, use their voice with courage, and build legacies that outlive the moment.
I am also in a season of deeper writing and expansion. My memoir, my scholarship, my teaching, and my leadership development work are beginning to speak to one another in a more integrated way. What once felt like separate parts of my life now feels like one body of work.
At this stage, I am not trying to prove who I am. I am practicing the courage to fully embody it.
That is where I am today. Building from the inside out. Leading with soul and strategy. And creating spaces where others can do the same.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road, but at this stage of my life, I understand the road differently.
Earlier in my journey, I thought struggle meant something was wrong. Now, I understand that struggle often shows me where growth, alignment, and refinement are trying to happen. The challenge in this season has not been starting over. It has been learning how to fully embody what I have already built.
For many years, I was the one doing the work behind the scenes. Teaching. Coaching. Consulting. Writing. Supporting others. Holding space. Solving problems. Helping leaders, students, and organizations navigate complex systems. I became very good at carrying responsibility—sometimes too good.
One of my struggles has been learning that I do not have to overperform to prove my value. I can serve deeply without disappearing into the service. I can lead with compassion without carrying what is not mine. I can be present without taking on every assignment simply because I am capable.
That has been a major part of my current growth.
Building the Sacred Reformer™ body of work has required me to slow down, listen inwardly, and ask deeper questions. What is mine to build now? What needs structure? What needs release? What deserves visibility? What am I no longer available to shrink around?
Another struggle has been bringing all the pieces of my work into one clear ecosystem. CJD Consulting, Lead From Within, The Within™ Model of Leadership, S.E.R.V.E.™, The Amplified Leader™, my teaching, my writing, my scholarship, and my coaching are not separate callings. They are connected expressions of the same purpose. Learning how to name that clearly and build around it with intention has taken courage.
One way this season is taking form is through my forthcoming book, The Sacred Reformer: Leading From Within. The book gathers a year of sacred reflections on presence, power, and becoming. It represents the deeper evolution of my work: helping leaders move beyond performance, overfunctioning, and self-abandonment into a more grounded, whole, and internally aligned way of leading.
The road has taught me that leadership is not only about expansion. It is also about integration. It is about becoming whole enough to carry the next level without losing yourself in it.
But it has been sacred.
And I would not trade the wisdom of the road for the illusion of an easier one.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about CJD Consulting Solutions, LLC, including the CJD Servant Leadership Academy and Lead From Within?
CJD Consulting Solutions, LLC, is the professional home for my leadership development, executive coaching, organizational consulting, teaching, writing, and doctoral support work. At its core, CJD helps leaders and organizations align how they lead with what they say they value.
We specialize in servant leadership, organizational development, executive coaching, culture building, leadership training, and support for new and mid-level managers. But in this season, I am also expanding the brand into a deeper leadership ecosystem through my Sacred Reformer™ body of work and Lead From Within.
What I want readers to know is that my work is not simply about helping people become more productive leaders. It is about helping people become more whole leaders. I believe leadership begins before the meeting, before the strategy, before the title, and before the public performance. It begins within the person who is carrying responsibility, making decisions, holding power, managing pressure, and shaping culture.
That belief is shaping the next evolution of CJD.
Through Lead From Within, I am creating a public space for deeper reflection around presence, power, becoming, sacred influence, inner authority, and leadership that does not require self-abandonment. This work is also becoming a forthcoming book, The Sacred Reformer: Leading From Within: A Year of Sacred Reflections on Presence, Power, and Becoming. The book brings together a year of reflections on what it means to lead from wholeness rather than survival, performance, or overfunctioning.
What sets CJD apart is the integration. My work brings together scholarship, strategy, lived experience, spiritual intelligence, and practical leadership development. I can sit with an executive team discussing culture and systems, coach a doctoral learner through academic uncertainty, facilitate a leadership workshop, and write about the inner life of leadership—and, to me, all of that is connected. It is the same work expressed through different doors.
Brand-wise, I am most proud that CJD has matured into something both grounded and expansive. It is no longer just a consulting firm that delivers training. It is a leadership ecosystem rooted in service, integrity, voice, reflection, and transformation.
I want readers to know that this next chapter is intentional. I am building spaces, frameworks, books, conversations, and learning experiences for leaders who are ready to stop performing leadership and begin embodying it.
That is the heart of CJD now.
Leadership from the inside out.
Service without self-abandonment.
Power with integrity.
And legacy built with soul.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see the leadership development and organizational consulting industry moving toward deeper integration over the next five to ten years.
For a long time, leadership development was often treated as a workshop, a curriculum, or a professional development requirement. I believe that is changing. Organizations are beginning to understand that leadership is not just what people know. It is how they think, regulate, communicate, make decisions, use power, build trust, and create culture.
The biggest shift I see is the movement from performative leadership to embodied leadership.
Leaders will need more than technical competence. They will need emotional steadiness, ethical clarity, cultural intelligence, adaptability, and the ability to hold complexity without becoming reactive. Artificial intelligence will continue changing how we work, but I believe it will also make human-centered leadership more important, not less.
McKinsey’s recent work on leadership in the age of AI reinforces what I have long believed: as technology becomes more capable, human leadership becomes more essential. Judgment, empathy, trust, creativity, and relationship-building are not soft extras. They are core leadership advantages in a rapidly changing workplace.
I also believe organizations will have to take burnout, nervous system regulation, psychological safety, and a sustainable pace more seriously. Many leaders have been rewarded for overfunctioning, constant availability, and urgency. That model is not sustainable. The future of leadership will require people who can build cultures where clarity, accountability, rest, and results can coexist.
This is where my Sacred Reformer™ body of work is especially aligned with where I believe the industry is going. Through Lead From Within, The Within™ Model of Leadership, S.E.R.V.E.™, and The Amplified Leader™, I am focused on helping leaders move from survival-based leadership to grounded, ethical, internally aligned leadership.
I also think the next decade will ask organizations to become more honest about whether their stated values are actually reflected in their systems. It will not be enough to say an organization values people, inclusion, wellness, or service. Leaders will have to examine how decisions are made, how power is used, whose labor is recognized, how conflict is handled, and whether the culture makes it possible for people to remain whole while doing meaningful work.
That is the future I am building toward.
Leadership from the inside out.
Power without domination.
Service without self-abandonment.
Culture without performance theater.
And organizations where people do not have to disappear in order to succeed.
