Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Johnson.
Hi Bobby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Bobby Johnson, I am from Middle of Missouri, moved to Kansas City in 2010. But the story starts in maybe 2007 in Marshall, MO. At first I managed a local band pointing them toward shows etc. Then I started Booking Shows in the garage they practiced at.
After that I joined a band, we changed our name. Eventually I’d realize I’m not gonna wanna beg someone to fit in. (submit to labels and feel rejected) Decided to do it myself. Wasn’t long I found I’m not the only one who liked the idea and my friends would like being involved as well. For the most part I just created a place for like minded bands to exist. So I end up just helping their art exist by funding / co-funding or being quality assurance on creating physical for them. Would say It’s basically that over and over again til bands I’ve never met want involved. About the time we did our first vinyl release I worked with Brian Dooley (Tigon, Almanac Man) and he remains involved from Denver.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Haha well logistics and price changes and bands breaking up while the LPs ship to you.
Nothing new to anyone thick skulled enough to dedicate their lives to loud music.
No regrets, just a ton of learning on the fly. You can’t forget you do this for the people. Musicians and those who would possibly be moved by the groups gift to the rest of us. To me it’s simple. This is a way to last longer than yr physical body allows. Spend time with great friends and loved ones and leave behind Records of yr time spent / adventure.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the vocalist of two bands currently, Canyons (the first release and catalyst for TGIC) and my newer band with good friend (and bassist in Canyons) Dylan Pyles playing Guitar/ writing for Burnbarrel.
The way I hear it TGICRECS is known for Noise Rock, however we mainly work in Friendships and because of that there is no hard barrier on the genres. (Though I famously do not typically want involved with double bass drumming). *It can exist tastefully, I am just picky, we have had everything from classic Screamo releases, Noise Rock, Hardcore, to including the places in between you may not know exists. As far as most proud of, that’s easy! Hands down it’s watching a number of friends Make crazy efforts to tour and be consistent and to make a difference in so many lives while seeing the world and bringing joy to others.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
You can’t do it all.

*it’s rough not being able to help people who’s music moves you, be it due to scheduling etc.
that part doesn’t get easier. Realistically though, I will have to realize not everything is my responsibility.
