Meet Scott Runnels of Runnels Chiropractic North

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Runnels.

Hi Scott, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My first adjustment was at 14 years old. I was in severe low back pain with burning going into my right leg which caused me to be unable to participate in wrestling practice. My Mom scheduled an appt with my local chiropractor and after the adjustment, was able to go back to wrestling. In my early 20’s, I was once again experiencing similar low back pain after working for several years building houses. By that time, my older brother was a practicing chiropractor in Overland Park, KS. He explained that I would need a little more consistent care and so he adjusted me for little over a month and not only did my low back pain go away but my neck pain and HA’s were no longer present. At this point I was a huge advocate for chiropractic care but had no plans of becoming a chiropractor. In 2008 I had just left construction and was working for the rail road but due to economic lays off, I found myself looking for a career change. At this point my brother mentioned going to Cleveland Chiropractic(his alma mater) and doing a tour. After speaking to several other chiropractors, I decided to go back to school, finish my undergrad and then apply for chiropractic school. I started Chiropractic school in 2010, graduated in December of 2014 and opened my own practice in Basehor Kansas in June of 2015. When I opened up, I had zero patients and have built it up to where it is today with the help and support of my wife and family.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any business there are ups and downs but the biggest struggles in my 11 years of practice have been starting from scratch and having to really pound the pavement, market to other businesses, build relationships with the community that already had two established chiropractic practices in the town. Of course trying to keep a business running that had only been around for 5 years through the pandemic was a major obstacle. As a chiropractor you go to school to learn how to help heal people but there is very little education in the way of running a business at Chiropractic College. I was lucky to have great mentors but it was a struggle none-the-less.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Runnels Chiropractic North?
Runnels Chiropractic North is a chiropractic clinic that mainly focuses on the chiropractic adjustment however we do offer other modalities. While the practice does respond and work with a large amount of acute issues, the main goal is to educate people about chiropractic and the importance of chiropractic maintenance as well as overall wellness practices(exercise and nutrition). The adjustment is powerful and I believe that delivering it is the most important thing that I can do.

How do you think about happiness?
I love serving God, my family and my community. I’m a disciple of Christ and anyway I can glorify him makes me happy. I’m blessed with a great wife and 4 children. I love spending time with them and watching them grow. I’m a musician. I play drums and guitar. I really enjoy playing music and seeing it move people especially at church where I have the honor of getting to play for services. I love helping people through chiropractic and seeing their lives improve.
