Today we’d like to introduce you to King Dari.
Hi King, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Kansas City during a time where finding your identity was difficult as a different kid in classrooms that looked different than you, so for me I spent my early childhood learning what I wanted to do. Everyone is so unique and talented, and for a while I struggled wondering what I could bring to the table. When COVID-19 shut down everything, it also wiped the slate clean for me, and over the course of the past 6 years I really took the time to find out what I wanted to do, and I’m so glad that I did because I realized that not only could I sing, but I was so much more than a label or anything that people could define me as; and it’s a superpower to have now.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Haha if it were easy, I’d be in a different place in life! All seriousness though—I’ve been given a path in life that, at times—test the very essence of who I am. From being homeless, to dealing with the loss of close friends/loved ones, these things affected me in so many ways, and yet I’m so grateful and lucky that I’ve been able to have a village of people who has seen me through it all, without judgement and with compassion (Shoutout to my therapist). While I personally don’t believe that we are supposed to go through struggles to learn lessons; I am a very big advocate of understanding that life really has no set course, and you have to learn how to navigate through it with compassion for yourself, and always remembering what your eye is set on. It’s what has gotten me through most days.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As Don Domingo once said (Shoutout to big bro!!) I’m “Dr. Do It All” because I am a multifaceted artist. I sing/songwrite, I rap, I produce and can engineer my own mixes, and I also act and do content creation. All of these took time to really learn; and I’m proud to have all of these as assets that I’m not only good at, but make me the artist that I am.
But it’s the work ethic that sets me apart, I feel. Every day, I wake up and I’m working on something, even if it doesn’t seem like I am, and not many people can do so consistently, because I know the sacrifices that are necessary for that kind of commitment. For me, however, it’s engrained into me because I always want to be better than I was the day before, and I always want to show up.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Genuine love & kindness. Too many times people give kindness from a place of expectation to get something back, but when you take away the ego/expectation of receiving something in return, you can truly love people from a kind place, and I think we can all improve on this one, even myself. I want to be so radiant that nothing stands in the way of my success, even if it’s a bad situation, and just show that love is the only way to make a life that is truly fulfilling.
