Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Bogart.
Hi Maurice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From growing up in North Kansas City to then moving downtown (after finishing Hair school) , I’ve always had a passion for visual aspects. Originally, I decided to move downtown to chase a broader clientele base, which was true, but the clients that I’ve grown up with since I started in high school (Winnetonka) still followed me everywhere. Now, fast-forward, I’ve decided to move back closer to where I began my journey building clients and relationships. With over 10+ years in the industry, I’m constantly looking for ways to do more with my craft. I have created Appointments Only to finally make good on a promise to be of service to my community, but to also help new and talented artists hone in on their craft and guide their careers to where they want them to go.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When it comes to the building anything meaningful you must look at the obstacles in front of you and determine if the benefits of completing said goal are worth it. All whilst understanding that all good things come at a cost and personally I prefer to pay upfront for the blessings god has provided me.
With that being said the adjustments in life necessary to opening/operating a business are often overlooked and each day is a learning opportunity and/or process.
Now the main goal is to further develop the Appointments Only Brand and learning what our identity will be.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When I first got into hair I was because no one in the northland could cut mixed hair and I mean nobody, I had to fill the void & I’m proud to say I’ve done that now.
To add icing on this cake I was great at drawing but once I realized it translated to hair I had a path. For the first 5 years I went nuts I was doing all types of designs and colors I wanted to rival some of the best artists in Kansas City at the time alll while ushering in a new generation of barbers. Im talking Instagram in the first 4 years it was crazy.
It ended up preparing me for situations where I’m doing designs for pro NWSL player AD Franch while she played for the KC Current.
The aspect the sets me apart most is my goal is the same as the persons in the chair every time, getting them the best possible look and repeat it consistently as long as possible. But in the same breath understanding what options we have for different styles and creating variations for that individual. It’s a very detailed approach to barbering that I’m obsessed with and not a lot of people can replicate my style let alone my drive for the industry.
What does success mean to you?
I believe outlining what one considers success is very circumstantial being that we all come from different backgrounds and for some survival is success.
But to give an answer I say
Whatever it’s takes to achieve your dreams while also maintaining what you need to survive and be happy at home.
