Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesley Janssen.
Hi Lesley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story started young. I was always entranced by horses. I was able to start riding in Swope Park. My passion grew into owning horses and, ultimately, a boarding stable. I love teaching those willing to learn the art of riding, not just sit on a horse, but actually connect with the animals. Another favorite part of my job is teaching young horses. It is so satisfying to watch them learn and develop.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were so many struggles. I still have them but I am more seasoned now to ride out the chaos. We started this with minimal capital. We saw an opportunity and jumped at it. We built it and the people came. My late husband and I did anything and everything we could to make things better each day. Be it riding or tidying up the barn. When my husband passed, I struggled and scrimped to make it work on my own. That was over 15 years ago. No matter how bad you are ready to quit in the moment, it is worth it in the end.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am known for taking great care of the horses in my barn. I am also known for turning out great riders. Riders that can handle about anything thrown at them, be it at home or at a show. I specialize in raising quality American Quarter Horses. I am proud that I have been awarded the distinction of being an AQHA Professional Horseman. My horses and riders speak for my dedication to this sport. and the people in it.
What are your plans for the future?
I am looking forward to seeing the development and skill of my stallion Left Unsupervised, aka Steve. He comes from my unicorn of a brood mare. Zelda has not raised a bad foal yet. I was able to combine her DNA with that of an amazing stallion from years ago, Natural Iron. Steve will be fun to promote and watch his future take off.
