Life & Work with Hannah Helverson of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Helverson.

Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey as a photographer in 2019, when I was looking to combine my need for a creative outlet with my love for travel. I wanted to travel the world while capturing the candid, beautifully real moments that make a love story.

My love for all things weddings started during my time as an event assistant at a local wedding venue. I always admired how involved the photographers were in the entire process, capturing every carefully curated detail while also being present for all the raw, real moments.

I knew I wanted to be the type of business owner who connected with my clients on a personal level. I wanted to be whatever they needed on their day while also providing high-quality work. I am extremely honored by every couple who has trusted me to bring their vision for their wedding to life.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My biggest challenge when starting was wanting to create these meaningful relationships as a lifelong introvert. As a photographer, it is so important to be outgoing and direct. I realized early on that most people feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. This is something I could relate to, and I have used that understanding to help many couples open up during a session.

I absolutely love candid photos. I want to capture what makes your love story unique. I do think showing my true, complete, and sometimes awkward self is what makes me stand out. This business is a labor of love, and my clients know that. Being true to yourself builds the trust needed to be entrusted with these sacred moments.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a documentary wedding photographer, my goal is to preserve the pure essence of the day through an editorial lens. My style can be described as bright, warm and true.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
The biggest surprise in the business has been how far a kind word can go. Let’s be honest, at least one thing goes wrong at every wedding. I’ve talked down countless brides simply by providing a shoulder to cry on or vent to, and reminding them of the reason for the whole day: their genuine love story.

The relationships I build with my brides are one of my favorite aspects of this job. They have helped build this business and have even led to lifelong friendships.
