Today we’d like to introduce you to Malisa Monyakula.
Malisa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to share my passion for food with others. I wanted to duplicate the fun of my childhood into my businesses. Meals in Thailand are about bringing people together, celebrating family, and creating community. My grandmother, my “yâa,” Khun Ya instilled a passion for Thai cuisine in each of her children. After my father moved to the United States, he instilled the same appreciation for Thai cooking in me. I realized there was an opportunity to introduce more people to authentic Thai cuisine while replicating my grandmother’s and Khun Pa’s (father’s) incredible meals.
From the beginning of building LuLu’s Thai Noodle Shop in 1997, I wanted to create something fitting for a vibrant food scene that also stayed true to the flavors and traditions from the childhood that my father shared with me.
Since then, we’ve grown to three main locations across Kansas City and expanded our menu. Each dish is a testament to generations of perfecting the recipes. Today, LuLu’s has become a gathering place for families creating memories around these cherished dishes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started Lulu’s Thai Noodle Shop with only a $14,000 startup investment and commuted from Kansas City to Lawrence seven days a week when the first restaurant opened. It was a lot of hard work and believing in the vision I set out for myself. Owning a restaurant teaches you that there will always be challenges, but we’ve navigated recessions, a pandemic, rising food costs, and more.
Every challenge has reinforced our ability to adapt without losing sight of who we are. For us, that means serving authentic Thai food, taking care of our team, and making every guest feel welcome. As a leader or restaurateur, if you can focus on those things, you can get through almost anything.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
LuLu’s Thai Noodle Shop is built around authentic Thai flavors, fresh ingredients, and genuine hospitality. We’re known for our noodle dishes, from comforting Pad Thai to flavorful Drunken Noodles. We also take pride in introducing guests to regional Thai specialties that they may not have tried before. Guests can expect a warm, inviting atmosphere where each dish tells a story from my childhood.
We’re also committed to sustainability with each dish we serve, sourcing from local farms and supporting these communities. We enjoy giving back to local farmers and collaborating with organizations that support fresh food and ingredients.
I’m especially proud of the relationships we’ve built throughout Kansas City. We’ve been fortunate to become part of people’s traditions like family dinners, celebrations, first dates, wedding proposals, and everyday meals. We also love partnering with local organizations and participating in community events because we love being active members of the neighborhoods we serve.
What matters most to you? Why?
LuLu’s Thai Noodle Shop has grown from humble beginnings, and I couldn’t have done it without people gravitating toward me with my vision. My team has been in it together with me from the start.
Our guests trust us to be a part of their celebrations and everyday lives. That’s something I never take for granted. I believe food has the power to connect people across cultures and create a lasting memory. If people leave LuLu’s Thai Noodle Shop feeling welcomed, cared for, and maybe having learned something new about someone else or Thai culture, then we’ve done our job. That’s what continues to inspire me every day.
