Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlee Burlile.
Ashlee, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve loved to draw and paint since I was practically a baby. I would always be drawing while watching TV or when I was supposed to have some quiet time. Throughout my high school years I took every art class I possibly could from 2D Art, 3D Art, Ceramics, AP Studio Art, etc. I do also have a Bachelors degree in video game art, but I’ve found my passion in painting and pottery for now. It wasn’t until 4 years ago that I decided to try ceramics again for the first time since that tiny little taste of it I got back in high school. Ever since I invested in that first class in 2023 I’ve been sold. I have been slowly growing my pottery collection of other potters along with my personal collection that I keep and sell for others to enjoy. I love all art forms though and still take up a mural or portrait commission from time to time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part, I would say it’s been smooth enough. Nothing is 100% at all times, but I go with the ebbs and flows that is art. Some weeks I’m exhausted with my full time job and have no creative juice left in me to make anything. Other weeks I’m a making monster and dish (no pun intended) out a whole board of mugs waiting to be perfectly sculpted and painted into my vision – while simultaneously trying to bust out 2 murals in the same weekend!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do it all! I love making a space feel like your own with a custom mural. I love capturing someone’s personality through painting a portrait. I love creating a functional piece of art through pottery. Any way I can add art to someone’s daily life is a win for me.
Most of my work is centered around nature. In my pottery collection, something that sets me apart from others is that I add a lot of hand drawn, painted, and carved images to my pieces. So not only are they sculptural or canvas like, but they are also used as everyday items like mugs, vases, or platters.
How do you think about luck?
I’ve had great luck and joy in this business because I’ve never made it my full time job. That makes it very forgiving. If I need to take a break, I’m good to go. If I want to ramp up production, I get to do that! I’ve been very fortunate to get to decide what I do with this so far. But maybe one day I’ll be able to make it a full time adventure!
