Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric John Campros.
Hi Eric John, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I spent my early years being shuffled around the California foster care system with no understanding of safety or home.. That changed when I turned ten and was fortunately placed with a family who loved the arts. Having been discarded over and over again I did not trust easily and had no sense of belonging. Being introduced to theater and dance is what opened my mind to possibility and brought me connection to others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Once I began training in dance I was extremely focused and driven. I had wonderful teachers in California and a mom that laid a strong foundation in me of belief in possibility and respect for the work. I moved to New York City and was quickly confronted with the reality that not everyone is your ally. I was constantly told to quit, that I wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t attractive enough, I wasn’t interesting enough to be successful. It was devastating but I had experienced worse and I refused to let the nonsense define my future.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am now a choreographer and movement coordinator working on the hit television series Law and Order. As a dancer I enjoyed great success dancing on Broadway in Grease followed by tours with The Backstreet Boys and Usher as well as performances with Britney Spears. and Lil Kim. I have taught all over the world and in every state and am guest faculty at Yale University and Sacred Heart University. I honor the career that I have created but I take the most pride in the relationships it has brought. Many of my friends are magnificent, extraordinary artists who humble and inspire me every day.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way you can support me and other artists is to show up! Support your local theater, support your local high school. Go to music concerts. Go to plays. Go to musicals. Go to art shows. Show up at the coffee house to support the singer-songwriter as they build an audience. There are talented artists making delicious work in every nook and cranny of our country. I believe that magic as an artist exists in the risks we do not take so when you show up it gives us encouragement to continually take risk and discover more magic.
