Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Scarborough.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I hail from Austin, TX where I first started my skin studio business, Amy’s Skincare, in 2002. In 2016, I moved to Kansas City, and have made this my home. I now operate Skin Studio KC in West Waldo, where I help my clients love the skin they’re in by offering science-based corrective and anti-aging skin treatments and waxing services. I’ve been a Licensed Aesthetician since 2000 — before social media, before smartphones, before CRM software, so I built my business from word of mouth and developing trust with my clients. We also didn’t have Botox and fillers, so I and my cohorts have learned skincare by customizing treatments and ingredients to each person’s skin type and needs. I would say that foundation still holds true for me today. Skin Studio KC’s three pillars are Science, Results, and Confidence.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a business as a solo practitioner is gratifying but never easy. Major changes in technology, science, marketing landscape, and visual communications have all affected the way I must run Skin Studio KC. Economic cycles of ebb and flow also impact my business growth. As the skincare market segment has grown and become more competitive and saturated with new entrants, as well as proliferation of cosmetic and medical interventions, it’s become even more challenging (but important!) to reach consumers with fact-based education about their skin and how to care for it long-term.
I had my dream come true in 2017 by opening my storefront location of Skin Studio KC in Westport. Unfortunately, in 2019 a devastating fire damaged that location beyond repair and I had to rebuild my business from the ground up. The commercial real estate landscape in Kansas City is not easy to navigate, which has been another challenge I’ve had to tackle, In 2022, Skin Studio KC found its current home in the West Waldo neighborhood of Kansas City.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Skin Studio KC is more than my business — it is my way of expressing my skincare knowledge and philosophy to my clients. I call my approach the 25/75 philosophy. I believe 25% of how your skin looks and feels can be achieved through professional care and services — such as I provide in my office. And 75% is achieved through consistent and daily care you do at home. I can provide vital skin education and help you select the best products for your skin goals and a sustainable at-home skincare routine.
I also believe in customizing skin care instead of using one-size-fits-all approach. During your treatment, I will select the ingredients that your skin needs, today.
Finally, I believe that effective skincare should be achieved through the combination of optimal products, techniques, and devices. For example, one of my signature services is Procell Microchanneling, which can visibly reverse years of skin aging, scarring/hyperpigmentation, and hair loss by stimulating your own natural collagen production, and delivering powerful skincare ingredients deeper into your skin.
My work has earned me the appreciation and trust of my clients, which is evidenced by my 2024, 2025, and 2026 nominations for Kansas City Favorites in the Day Spa category, and 2025 win in Missouri’s Best in the Master of Skincare category.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how green and beautiful our city and its neighborhoods and parks are. Talking a walk in Loose Park and watching people walk with their dogs, play tennis, or stage impromptu photo shoots is great fun! I also have great appreciation for our arts and music scene. The food scene here is awesome as well.
What I like least is probably not surprising coming from a Texan — long, cold Midwestern winters can be a lot to take for somebody from a warmer climate.
