Today we’d like to introduce you to Madia Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started as a child 9 yrs old to be exact, playing in my friends hair. I hated getting ky hair combed so I learned how to do my own hair so my mom could leave me alone. It hurt when she combed my hair. When my mom noticed I had a gift to style hair at 9 she started to purchase me doll heads to practice more. After getting my GED at 24 I immediately enrolled in cosmetology school. When I finished that I went on to work with some of Kansas City’s finest hair dressers, to owning my own salons and also doing platform work Iman’s educating for a major product line . I’m currently back behind the chair as a hobby that pays me well but I consider myself retired.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been such a smooth road but an enjoyable one. Some of the major struggles were the down seasons in the winter time that plays a big role in business as well as Covid really affected stylist at that time.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Master Stylist who specializes in women’s cuts and dreadlock services. I’m know for growing hair and correcting hair issues. I’m most proud of my longevity in my career, I have been in the industry for 25 years and I have never had to go be an employee anywhere. So I will say my education in cosmetology has paid off and I have made a lot of money and have touched alot of lives. What sets me apart from others is my relationships with my clients have always been so rewarding. I have been told how I positively affect my clients lives and uplift their spirits and that was and still is my purpose.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see my industry growing tremendously but I would love to see more dreadlock salons opening in the industry. I really would love to see dreadlock schools because there is a lot of money in the loc industry.
