Check Out Pam Meek’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pam Meek.

Pam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I joined the Blue Springs City Theatre board ten years ago after my granddaughter developed an interest in performing in some of its shows. After learning more about the organization and its programs, I was invited to join the board. My professional background in nonprofit organizations and administration prepared me well for the role. Two years later, I became treasurer and have since been involved in fundraising, marketing, governance, and financial oversight for BSCT.

Today, we have established administrative protocols, approved bylaws, policies, and procedures, and implemented written budget processes. Many of these practices were already in place, but they had not been clearly documented or shared with the full board. We have also grown our board to support our mission as we expand partnerships throughout the community.

Although BSCT was founded in Blue Springs, Missouri, we have grown into a community theatre with reach throughout eastern Jackson County and into southern Clay County and northern Cass County. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and thinking creatively to bring live theatre arts to everyone.

This year, we celebrate 40 years of community theatre. We are excited about the future and look forward to another 40 years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As an organization, we have faced limited visibility in our community. Many people don’t know that the area has a community theater. We continue to address this by growing our social media presence and partnering with local businesses and chambers of commerce. We see it as a challenge, not an obstacle.

The pandemic pushed us to think creatively. We went virtual—literally—offering two productions nationwide over the internet in 2020. We learned a great deal about the technical side of streaming and the difficulty of reaching audiences unfamiliar with our work. At the same time, we lost the permanent venue we had called home for more than 30 years. We pivoted again: when society reopened, we partnered with local movie theaters, schools with performing arts centers, and event venues to secure regular performance space.

That approach served us well for five years. However, the costs of storing equipment, props, and costumes—combined with auditorium rental fees—have become prohibitive. In 2025, we launched a Capital Campaign for a new home for BSCT. As part of our 40th anniversary, we are hosting a “Blue Springs Got Talent” event on 9/12/2026, inviting performers from across the area to compete for prizes and community recognition. Our goal is not only to raise funds for a venue but also to build awareness of BSCT among local businesses, highlighting the cultural need for and the positive impact of community theater in eastern Jackson County.

We are blessed to have a strong core of performers and families that support us, answering the call to help us achieve this goal. People that know us because a family member or friend has performed with us, stay around and continue to attend our productions, participate in our fundraisers and share our information with the community. And we are always looking for those interested in supporting the organization through board membership and volunteerism.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Personally, I serve as the new business liaison and fund manager for Mid America Assistance Coalition. This nonprofit provides service-tracking software for emergency assistance agencies. It supports community-wide data sharing to better serve clients, identify unmet community needs, reduce duplication of services, and stretch limited agency resources. I also help onboard new agencies that want to use the software. As a fund manager, I administer utility and other emergency assistance funds across the country by verifying recipient eligibility, documenting and paying for services, and preparing a variety of reports on clients, services, and fund balances.

These responsibilities give me a valuable perspective on how systems and administrative procedures can strengthen my volunteer role as treasurer for BSCT. Over the past few years, we have implemented, documented, and improved these policies and procedures. These changes provide the theater with more complete, substantial and verifiable records for state and financial reviews.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking in general means putting yourself out there. You don’t have to be the center of attention, but not stepping up to introduce yourself to others in the room, asking one or two questions you might have about someone, will leave you without any contact at all.

Finding a mentor is unique to everyone, but a basic rule of thumb is–do not believe you know everything. There is always something to be learned and improved on in your life. Allow others to share their knowledge of that topic with you. You will find it will also work in the favor of others that might be interested in having you has a mentor themselves.
