Rising Stars: Meet Chandlar Smith of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chandlar Smith.

Hi Chandlar, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist since 2014 and have specialized in bridal hair and makeup since 2015. My career began in blow dry bars, where I spent the first six years refining my skills in hairstyling, makeup artistry, and creating polished, long-lasting looks in a fast-paced environment. During this time, I also made a big move to Chicago for a year, where I had the opportunity to experience a different culture within the beauty industry and grow both personally and professionally. These experiences gave me a strong technical foundation and taught me the importance of consistency, efficiency, and exceptional client care.

In 2020, I transitioned into a holistic spa where I had my own private salon space for nearly three years. It was there that my business truly began to evolve. I started hosting bridal trials in a more intimate setting and discovered how much I loved creating an experience that was just as meaningful as the final look. I’ve always deeply valued connection, intuition, nature, and spirituality, and I wanted to explore ways to connect with myself and others on a deeper level through energy work. During this time, I began diving further into the holistic world and earned my Reiki Level 1 and Level 2 certifications. This experience completely shifted the way I viewed beauty and wellness and has become a meaningful part of both my personal life and my business.

Today, I specialize in luxury bridal hair and makeup throughout Kansas City and the surrounding areas. My signature style includes soft glam and natural glam makeup that enhances my brides’ natural beauty rather than transforms it, as well as full glam looks for brides who want something more elevated and dramatic. For hair, I especially love creating romantic, textured, boho-inspired styles that feel effortless, timeless, and true to each bride’s personal style.

What began as simply providing hair and makeup has evolved into creating a full bridal experience centered around confidence, connection, and intentional care. Alongside my artistry, I incorporate calming touches such as relaxing scalp massages and Reiki energy work into my bridal services to help my brides feel grounded, peaceful, and fully present on one of the most important days of their lives. My goal is for every bride to not only love how she looks, but to genuinely enjoy the process and feel cared for from the moment we begin.

Now, as a stay-at-home mom to my son, I’ve built my business around serving brides full-time. Specializing exclusively in weddings allows me to continue doing what I love while also being present for my family. Each wedding has allowed me to refine not only my artistry, but also the experience I provide- from personalized communication to thoughtful details that help make the wedding morning feel calm, joyful, and unforgettable. I feel incredibly grateful to play a small part in one of the happiest days of someone’s life while building a career that supports the life I’ve always dreamed of.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road, but I think every challenge has shaped me into the artist and business owner I am today. The beauty industry is constantly evolving, and there have been many seasons where I’ve had to step outside of my comfort zone, adapt, and continue growing.

One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to transition from being a hairstylist and makeup artist into becoming a business owner. Building a brand, managing client relationships, marketing, creating systems, and learning the behind-the-scenes side of running a business has been a journey in itself. I’ve had to continually invest in my education, my artistry, and my client experience to make sure I’m always growing and providing the best possible service.

Another challenge has been navigating seasons of change in my personal life while continuing to build my business. Becoming a mom completely shifted my priorities and perspective. I wanted to create a career that allowed me to continue pursuing my passion while also being present for my son, which led me to focus exclusively on weddings. Making that transition required a lot of faith, intentional decisions, and trust in myself and the business I’ve built.

There have also been moments of stepping into spaces where I had to redefine what success looked like for me. My approach to bridal beauty is very intentional — I’m not just creating a hairstyle or makeup look, I’m creating an experience. Bringing together artistry, holistic wellness, and genuine connection has been a process of trusting that what makes me different is also what makes my business special.

Looking back, the challenges have been some of the most valuable parts of my journey. They’ve helped me become more resilient, more confident, and more aligned with the kind of artist and business owner I want to be.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in bridal hair and makeup throughout Kansas City and the surrounding areas, creating timeless, romantic looks that allow each bride to feel like the most confident version of herself. With over a decade in the beauty industry and nearly a decade specializing in bridal, I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many different styles, personalities, and wedding visions.

My work is best known for soft glam and natural glam makeup that enhances a bride’s natural beauty while still feeling elevated and photo-ready. I also love creating full glam looks for brides who want something more dramatic. For hair, I specialize in romantic, textured styles, especially boho-inspired looks that feel effortless, feminine, and true to the bride’s personal style.

What I’m most proud of is the experience I’ve created around my artistry. I don’t want my brides to just love their final look — I want them to remember how they felt while getting there. The wedding morning can be filled with excitement, nerves, and a lot of emotions, and I take pride in creating a calm, supportive environment where my brides can relax and truly enjoy the moment.

What sets me apart is the combination of my beauty background and my holistic approach. My years of experience behind the chair have given me the technical skills to create beautiful, lasting looks, while my journey into holistic wellness has taught me the importance of connection, intention, and caring for the whole person. Through details like scalp massages and Reiki energy work, I’m able to offer something that goes beyond traditional hair and makeup services.

At the end of the day, I’m most proud that I’ve built a business based on making people feel seen, confident, and cared for. Being trusted with such an important part of someone’s wedding day is an honor, and I never forget the responsibility that comes with that.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The biggest piece of advice I would give someone just starting out is to be patient with the process and focus on building a strong foundation. When I first entered the beauty industry, I didn’t realize how much time, experience, and growth it would take to truly find my style, my voice, and the type of experience I wanted to create for my clients.

I spent years refining my skills, learning from different environments, and growing into the artist and business owner I am today. One thing I wish I had known earlier is that the qualities that make you different are often your greatest strengths. For me, my passion for connection, holistic wellness, and creating a calming experience became a meaningful part of my brand.

My advice is to stay curious, continue investing in yourself, don’t compare your journey to others, and trust that consistency and authenticity will create a foundation for long-term success.
