Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Cason.
Hi Amy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up on a farm in Smithville, Missouri, where I spent countless hours picking flowers from my mother’s and grandmother’s gardens. I loved working alongside them, arranging the blooms until they looked just right in the vases and containers. When I was seven, my mother told me I should do this for a living when I grew up—and that is exactly what I did.
I had been preparing to save for floral school in Seattle right after high school when a local grocery store called, offering to train someone in floral design. I spent the next five years with them, learning the craft and the business side of the industry. Still, I struggled with the desire to incorporate the things I grew in my own gardens into my designs—something that was frowned upon at the time. I soon realized my true passion lay in weddings and special events, so I left to start my own business: Victorian Gardens Floral Design.
The name was inspired by the glossy pages of Victoria magazine that always graced my grandmother’s coffee table. Those pages transported me into the English gardens they portrayed and into a time and era I felt I had missed. It was also inspired by The Secret Garden, the book I fell in love with at the age of five. Nearly thirty years later, that dream is still alive and blooming.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Over the past 30 years, the floral industry has undergone significant and continuous change. What was once dominated by traditional, carbon-copy flower shop designs has evolved into a hands-on, creative approach centered on custom design and styling—work that builds a vision and tells a story. Keeping up with new and current trends, even as many of them fade, has been both challenging and exciting. My motto has always been: “Never stop learning so you can always keep growing.”
The greater struggle, however, has been finding balance between work, home life, and my own health. In 2021, after several very busy years and at the height of Victorian Gardens, I began to feel that something was wrong. I struggled not to fall off ladders while working on installations, and simply getting out of the car or out of bed left me in excruciating pain with frozen joints. After finally listening to my body, I sought help and had colon cancer removed from my worn-down body. This scare made me realize I needed more support than I could provide myself.
Through much prayer, a former freelancer who had worked with me in the past—and whom I had known for years—moved back into the area. She has officially become co-owner of Victorian Gardens and has been my answer to prayer. Together, we now share the load and continue moving forward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in garden-grown floral designs. We love incorporating vines, herbs, and other plants that many might overlook or dismiss as weeds. Each one has a unique, God-given purpose and its own quiet beauty. Our goal with every event is to create bouquets and arrangements that look as if you’ve just walked through my grandmother’s gardens—arms full of cascading blooms that bounce gently in the breeze.
What sets us apart is the depth of experience we’ve gained over the years. We’ve walked through the industry’s highs and lows, learned how to navigate challenges, and gained the wisdom and knowledge that have allowed us to thrive—while still learning and adjusting each year.
We are proud to be a faith-based company. Every year brings uncertainty about how much or how little work will come our way. We trust the Lord to bring in our clients and count each one as a blessing from Him. We believe this foundation of faith is what truly sets us apart.
How do you define success?
I have traveled and worked in many states, including Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Texas, as well as abroad in Hong Kong and Europe. My work has been featured in publications such as Style Me Pretty, Martha Stewart Weddings, and many others. Yet being right here still in business almost 30 years later—supported by my family and friends—will always be what I consider true success.
