Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Vallejo.
Hi Jennifer , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Spanish for Little Learners was born from my own experience as a mother raising two bilingual children. When my first child was born, I realized how difficult it was to find engaging, high-quality Spanish programs for young children that also involved parents in the learning process. I wanted to create the kind of program I wished had existed for my own family.
What started as a small idea has grown into a comprehensive language program serving children from infancy through age 12. For over 14 years, Spanish for Little Learners has been serving families and children throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area in both Missouri and Kansas. Today, we offer parent-child classes for ages 0–5, in-person drop-off classes, online private and group lessons, and summer camps. In addition, we partner with early childhood centers and Montessori schools across the Kansas City area, bringing Spanish language enrichment directly into their classrooms. Throughout the years, our mission has remained the same: to provide interactive, educational, and enriching Spanish classes while empowering parents to continue learning and practicing Spanish at home with their children.
I believe that introducing a second language early in life opens the door to lifelong opportunities. Learning Spanish not only strengthens children’s communication skills but also enhances cognitive development, builds confidence, and fosters an appreciation for different cultures. My goal has always been to create a joyful, play-based environment where children naturally acquire Spanish through music, movement, storytelling, games, and hands-on activities.
Looking back, what began as a passion project inspired by my own family has become a meaningful way to help hundreds of children develop a love for language, connect with diverse cultures, and build skills that will benefit them for years to come. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch the program grow from serving just a few families to becoming a trusted resource for families, early childhood centers, and Montessori schools throughout the Kansas City region.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, it has been a rewarding journey, and in many ways, the families and children I have had the privilege of teaching have made it easier to continue year after year. Their encouragement, kind words, and feedback have continually inspired me to grow the program. Many families have shared how much their children enjoyed learning Spanish and how they were able to incorporate the language into their daily lives. Their suggestions and support have helped shape Spanish for Little Learners into what it is today.
Like any small business, there have also been challenges. One of the biggest has been finding the balance between running a business and raising my own family. While building Spanish for Little Learners, I was also homeschooling my children, so learning to divide my time between teaching, planning, administrative work, and being present for my family required intentionality and flexibility. Looking back, it has been a special journey because my children have grown alongside the business. They started as little students in my classes, and today, at ages 15 and 12, they enjoy helping with the program whenever they can.
Another challenge was building interest in early childhood Spanish education. When I started Spanish for Little Learners over 14 years ago, there were far fewer families looking for Spanish immersion opportunities for young children than there are today. It has been exciting to watch parents become increasingly interested in bilingualism and recognize the lifelong benefits of learning a second language. While interest has grown tremendously, one ongoing challenge is that as children get older, their schedules often become filled with sports, music lessons, and other extracurricular activities, making it more difficult for families to continue language learning. Even so, I am grateful that so many families choose to begin their bilingual journey with us, and I hope we help inspire a lifelong appreciation for the Spanish language.

Spanish for Little Learners specializes in providing engaging, interactive Spanish language experiences for young children and their families. We offer parent-child classes for children ages 0–5, in-person and online classes for children ages 5–12, summer camps, and Spanish enrichment programs in early childhood centers and Montessori schools throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area in both Missouri and Kansas.
What makes our program special is that we focus on creating meaningful connections with children and families. We believe that language learning is not just about vocabulary and grammar—it is about building confidence, creating cultural connections, and making children feel excited and comfortable using another language. Our classes are designed to be joyful, hands-on, and developmentally appropriate, incorporating music, movement, play, storytelling, and interactive activities.
One of the things I am most proud of is the relationships we have built with families over the years. Many families have stayed with us for several years, and it has been incredibly rewarding to watch their children grow—from babies and toddlers in our parent-child classes to older children who continue developing their Spanish skills. Seeing families return year after year and sharing in their children’s bilingual journey has been one of the greatest rewards of this work.

We truly get to know our students, celebrate their progress, and create a welcoming environment where every child feels valued and encouraged.
