Today we’d like to introduce you to Knotty Orchid.
Hi Knotty, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I took over what is now Risqué Revelry, LLC in 2021, coming right out of the pandemic as the producer of my old troupe decided to retire from producing. When I took over I wanted to create something special from the groundwork my predecessor had laid, which included getting properly LLC’d and all the “fun” red tape of legal paperwork.
Since then Risqué Revelry, LLC has built up community and created a show with high standards but open arms. Our goals remain true to making sure marginalized voices are always highlighted. We have done monthly shows consistently since 2021 with several sold out shows in our first year and continuing to grow in the competitive market of Kansas City entertainment.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have had some struggles as most of the entertainment industry has taken hits over the years due to the economy and changing climates. We are so happy to see the continued growth and resurgence of burlesque in Kansas City but with that growth we inherently see some competition for crowds, especially being a niche entertainment choice for most people.
One of our biggest goals over the last two years has been to push burlesque into new markets and make ourselves known to the wider Kansas City Metro population. And although we have had some push back for some venues who aren’t ready to embrace the confidence that these beautiful performers have on stage — we have built some amazing new relationships with venues that have been incredibly sweet and kind to us this year! Including Lifted Spirits Distillery and OCTA – Olathe Civic Theatre Association.
And of course through all the obstacles The Arts Asylum in Brookside has been an ever-present friend and home for our troupe and shows.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am Knotty Orchid and I am a burlesque and belly dance performer in the Kansas City Metro area who produces a monthly show called Risqué Revelry. We provide exhilarating monthly shows, curated with the finest talent in and outside of Kansas City!
As a performer I am known for my chameleon like ability to create acts for any occasion with the flexibility to suit nearly any crowd. I combine my extensive theatre and dance background with my culture to create unique pieces that leave a distinct impression on my audience.
As a producer I am adamantly protective of my performers and making sure People of Color and other marginalized performers have a safe place to express themselves. We push for diverse casting both within our own shows and in the shows of the greater KC Burlesque and Variety community.
In upholding those values we have been nominated four years in a row for The Pitch’s Best Burlesque Troupe, and won the first Runner-Up position for two years now! Last year we raised money for AIRR (Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation) and the fund for the Lahaina Fires that affected Hawai’i. Plus we put on Kansas City’s first ALL Latine and Hispanic Burlesque show last year!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel like my adherence to a high standard of ethics and professionalism has definitely assisted our success and allows us to stand out in a wider grouping.
Our goal is always to put our performers first in regards to safety and visibility. To make sure their art is seen as it was meant to be seen. We understand the vulnerability our performers and creative crews gift to us each show and we make sure that trust continues to be protected.
