Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Wilson.
Hi Adrian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas, and grew up in a family filled with talented singers. Music was woven into the fabric of my life from an early age. Raised in the church, I spent much of my childhood singing in the church choir, where I developed not only my love for music but also my passion for performing. My grandfather was a major influence on my love for listening and playing the blues. Spending time with him, I learned to appreciate the soul, authenticity, and history behind blues music—lessons that continue to shape my style as a musician today.
Throughout my life, music has been my “Saving Grace” It a way to decompress and navigate both the highs and lows that life brings. Whether I’m playing the saxophone, sitting behind the organ, singing, or writing original songs, music has always been my greatest form of expression. It has shaped who I am, strengthened my faith, and connected me with people from all walks of life.
That is where my musical journey began, and it continues to inspire everything I do today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Like many independent artists, I’ve faced my share of challenges, setbacks, and sacrifices. There were times when balancing family, work, ministry, and music seemed overwhelming. Building a band, earning opportunities to perform, investing in quality equipment, and establishing a name in the local music scene all required persistence, patience, and faith.
There were also moments of disappointment, shows that didn’t work out, financial struggles, and times when I questioned whether I should keep pursuing my dream. But every obstacle became a lesson, making me stronger, more resilient, and more determined to succeed.
Through it all, my faith in God, the support of my family, and my passion for music kept me moving forward. I believe every challenge has helped shape me into not only a better musician but also a better leader and person. Today, I can honestly say the journey has been worth every struggle because it has allowed me to connect with people through music and share hope, joy, and authenticity every time I step on stage.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the founder, bandleader, and lead vocalist for Big Luke & The Soul Disciples, a Kansas City-based band dedicated to delivering authentic, high-energy performances rooted in Blues, Soul, R&B, Motown, Funk, Jazz, and Classic Rhythm & Blues. My passion is creating unforgettable live music experiences that bring people together, regardless of age or background.
What I specialize in is connecting with audiences through genuine musicianship and heartfelt performances. Every show is about more than just playing songs, it’s about telling stories, creating memories, and making people feel something. Whether we’re performing at a blues festival, corporate event, wedding, private party, or restaurant/bar, our goal is always the same: to leave every audience better than we found them.
One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is leading Big Luke & The Soul Disciples to become two-time winners of the Kansas City Blues Society’s Road to Memphis Blues Challenge and earning two trips to compete as semifinalists at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Being recognized as a 2026 Kansas City People’s Choice Awards finalist for Best Live Band is another milestone that reflects the support we’ve received from our community and the dedication of every member of the band.
What truly sets us apart is our authenticity and versatility. We don’t simply perform music “We play music from our HEARTS, that you can feel in your SOUL!” Our performances blend soulful vocals, tight musicianship, audience interaction, and a genuine love for the music. With roots in the church and a deep appreciation for the blues, every performance reflects passion, faith, and the rich musical heritage of Kansas City.
Above all, I am most proud of using music to inspire, uplift, and connect people. Seeing an audience sing along, dance, smile, or be moved by a performance reminds me why I started this journey. For me, success isn’t measured only by awards or recognition it’s measured by the lasting impact our music has on the people who hear it.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned throughout my journey is to never let others dictate my outcome. There will always be people who doubt your abilities, question your vision, or tell you what you can’t accomplish. If I had listened to every negative opinion or setback, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I’ve learned the importance of staying true to who I am, both as an artist and as a person. Authenticity is something no one can take away from you. I’ve never wanted to imitate someone else’s success; instead, I’ve focused on finding my own voice, honoring my faith, and creating music that genuinely reflects my heart and my life experiences.
I’ve also learned that success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes perseverance, humility, hard work, and the willingness to keep going even when the road gets difficult. Every challenge has strengthened my character and reminded me that the journey is just as important as the destination.
If there’s one piece of advice I would give anyone pursuing their dream, it’s this: believe in yourself even when others don’t, stay true to your purpose, and never allow someone else’s limitations to define your potential. Your story is yours to write.
