Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Walker.
Hi Rick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in north Kansas City area above the river. Liberty. Normal house, family. Though my family grew up without a lot of money very hard working and independent group. I got a little older and started working very young. Did some sports here and there I was a chubby kid though. lol. I got older, bullied, harassed, robbed, etc. hung out with a lot of people I shouldn’t have been and spent a long time doing things I shouldn’t have. I worked hard to stop that and get away from that. One of the reasons is because of the influence of martial arts and god in my life. Both of those two factors alone changed my life 180 degrees. From drinking and smoking at 16 everyday parties every week, lying, stealing, to being honest, hardworking, and striving to keep kids on a better path. I’m just now turning 21 and I work hard to teach young adults and kids about fighting, mma, jiu jitsu, and life. I work mainly for Cast Iron BJJ under Josh LITTLETON, and train under him and Rudy bears mma/bjj. Hoping to take more fights if my own as well I’ve been a competitor since I started training at the age of 13! Praise god
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve faced financial struggles, moving houses, addiction to alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, debt, trouble with the law, and more. Mostly self caused or be the lifestyle I was CHOOSING to lead. We’ve overcome all of these things, not that it’s set and done but that we’re going upward not not downward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
MMA, BJJ, fighting, self-defense, and teaching younger generations how to handle themselves both with care and strength. Love and fortitude. I’m most proud of coming from the situations I was in and producing a better product out off myself and to be a mentor and guide to other young men and women in this community and accross the nation. I mostly work at Cast Iron BJJ, founded by Josh LITTLETON
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Oh sure, quitting jobs to pursue this, major pay cuts, putting competition expenses and business expenses on cards and loans and doing what I can to maintain this. And still working towards not being in those positions. But now we finally get paid to do what we love
