Today we’d like to introduce you to Petra Tupy.
Hi Petra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi everyone! I’m Petra, the proud owner of Midwest Lactation LLC and your friendly neighborhood Lactation Consultant. The coolest thing about me? I’m a mom to two amazing humans!
Motherhood has been the best adventure, and I feel so lucky that I get to walk alongside other moms on their breastfeeding journeys too.
I moved here from the Czech Republic in 2000, worked hard to become a nurse, and spent 10 wonderful years as a NICU nurse. While I was working, I breastfed both of my kids, and that experience completely lit the spark for my passion in lactation. It inspired me to become an IBCLC and open Midwest Lactation in 2018 so I could support more families.
When I’m not helping moms or shuttling my son to practice, you’ll probably find me outside soaking up nature with my family. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While it has not been a smooth road, I’d say there really has only been the occasional speed bump. I have always had faith that if I was meant to be able to help moms in this area, it would work out, and I’m a firm believer that rejection is redirection. But I can think of one true obstacle that has not only made it harder to do my job but has hurt moms as well. One insurance company has refused to honor lactation services to moms. Despite the fact that they have lactation coverage and it’s required by affordable care act, this company does not have any available covered providers in the area. This obstacle is one I work against often, doing my best to give the lactation help moms deserve, even while under this insurance provider.
As you know, we’re big fans of Midwest Lactation, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My main service and goal is to help moms feed their baby without guilt, meeting them where they are! Here are a few parts of my business that I want to highlight today. Whether their goal is to exclusively breastfeed, pump and bottle, manage breastfeeding while back at work, or find out what mix of methods works best for mom and baby, I’m here to help! If baby is under 3 weeks, I offer home visits, where we can work together to reach your goals in the comfort of your home! Lastly, I am not afraid to refer clients to my wide network of trusted providers, ensuring they have the team they need!
By integrating CFT and CST into my practice, I provide a holistic approach to infant wellness that perfectly supports my core lactation care.
I am very proud of the fact that I am a self-made and run business! Aside from my daughter occasionally helping on the tech side, I manage it all while connecting with moms on their breastfeeding journey! I love what I do and am so thankful that parents in the Kansas City community trust me to help them on their breastfeeding journey.
How do you think about luck?
Honestly, I’m not sure if any luck has had a part in my life and business. What I would say is that I’m very blessed for all of it, and I believe it is all a gift from God that can be taken away any second. Anything I have sprouts from that and some good old fashioned hard work.
