Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Hooks.
Hi Erika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I discovered my love for music at Skateland USA in Grandview, Mo. I starting working there at 15 years old. Worked there for 3 years. It was a Thursday night, Adult skate night. I was working. Probably in the snack bar or passing out the skates. The DJ was running late. The manager started playing some music that I knew nobody wanted to hear. So, I jumped in the booth. Played a few songs. When the DJ came rushing in, some customers came to the booth and said “Yo, Keep her on!” The rest is history. I started DJing Friday and Saturday nights at the rink.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest challenge is my self. I tend to get in my own way at times. Doubt, worry & overthinking are forms of stress. I’ve learned to be more intentional with the events I chose to be apart of. Not taking any ol’ gig because of money.

I’ve started my mobile DJ business in 2011. Starting out playing at house parties. I like the small venues, but I can also rock out large ones. In 2024, I’ve recommitted my life to Jesus Christ, and felt a strong nudge to become a gospel DJ… Again. To give the masses music that uplifts the Kingdom and plant good seeds that will bring people to Christ. That’s the job followers where called to do. To be fishers of men. After much self debating, praying,& crying, I decided to obedient. I revamped my business to focus more on Christian Hip-Hop, ChristianR&B, House, Contemporary, Afro-beats, and Worship music. I’ve created a YouTube page for my curated Gospel mixes. I’ve became a co-host on the radio show called It’s Your Time It’s Your Season on Gospel 1590 KPRT.
Shortly after, I won Best Female DJ at the Kansas City People’s Choice Awards. I celebrated with my youngest daughter as she was my plus one that evening. I was invited to join a worldwide crew of Disc Jockeys named Fleet DJs. I am now the 1st Female Gospel Fleet DJ in Missouri. Only main gospel genre female DJ in Kansas City.
I was nominated DJ of the Year at The 2025 Spin Awards in Atlanta,GA.
I’m currently nominated for DJ of the Year at the 2026 Fleet Gospel Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
