Inspiring Conversations with Philip Jayhawk Chan of Lightspeed Investing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Jayhawk Chan.

Hi Philip Jayhawk, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Philip Jayhawk Chan, President and CEO of Lightspeed Investing. My path here started on a pre-med track at the University of Kansas, where I was studying Neurobiology and Molecular Biosciences. Being close to that world gave me a front-row seat to something that stuck with me: how much stress and burnout high-earning professionals, especially physicians, carry when their entire financial future depends on a single income stream, their career.

That observation planted the seed for what would eventually become Lightspeed Investing. Rather than build another fund focused purely on growing assets under management, I wanted to do something different: open up access to the kind of institutional-level trading knowledge that’s historically stayed locked behind hedge fund walls. Our money management side has roots going back nearly two decades, and about four years ago we built out the education division specifically to help professionals learn this skill set directly, rather than just handing off their money to be managed.

Today, we work with physicians, entrepreneurs, executives, and other high performers who want real financial control without walking away from the careers they’ve spent years building.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building an education-focused firm inside an industry that’s historically been closed off wasn’t a straight line. Trust is hard to earn in trading and finance, especially with an audience like physicians, who are highly educated, understandably skeptical, and have seen no shortage of programs promising results without substance. Getting people to believe that institutional-level trading could be taught, not just performed by a select few, took time, consistency, and a lot of showing rather than just telling.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Lightspeed Investing is a futures and commodities trading education firm. What we specialize in is teaching a structured, risk-managed approach to trading that’s designed to fit around someone’s existing career rather than replace it. We work primarily with professionals, physicians, entrepreneurs, and executives, who are financially strong but often overexposed to a single income stream.

What sets us apart is that we’re not selling a black-box system or handing off management with no visibility. We teach the actual methodology, live, through regular classes (Monday/Wednesday evenings for strategy and teaching, Tuesday/Thursday mornings for live trading execution) so people can watch institutional-style trading happen in real time and build the skill themselves.

What we’re most proud of is the accessibility we’ve built. We genuinely care more about how many people get to experience and participate in this world than we do about growing a single fund’s size. That’s the whole philosophy behind the brand: democratizing something that’s traditionally been exclusive.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Yes. One person who significantly influenced the growth of my testimony is John Arnold, the natural gas trader I deeply admire. Beyond his trading success, what stood out to me was his discipline, integrity, and ability to apply insight consistently in high-pressure situations.

Observing his approach reinforced to me that faith, like any skill or discipline, requires consistency, accountability, and practical application. It showed me that living gospel principles with diligence and integrity produces real, measurable results—not just in business, but in personal growth and leadership as well.
