Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Dubinsky.
Julian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Started playing guitar and drums at the age of 13, absolutely fell in love with music and the idea of creating my own songs so around age 15 when i felt confident in my ability as a player, I started learning how to record. I started recording on a digital 8 track recording device, but maybe a year later I upgraded my setup by getting an Audio Interface for my desktop computer. That system carried me for years and this system allowed me to release my first album in 2018 under the name Daffy in the Bikini Zone. The whole first album was me by myself and a single microphone in the corner of the room. Since 2018 my lust for recording has grown exponentially, i now have a 24 track interface with a full home studio setup.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has been exciting for me, but it has certainly been difficult at times. Having the gear and the space isn’t the only part of the equation, in order to make any of that stuff work or even understand how it’s used took me a very long time to figure out. I didn’t set foot in a commercial recording studio until I was 22 when I went in to record the last Daffy in the Bikini Zone album at KWC Studio. Kyle is the owner and engineer over there and working directly with him both as an artist and co producer was a massive learning experience for me. I owe a lot of the knowledge i have now to that experience and anything Ive learned from other friends and creators. To this day I’m gathering as much information as I can because when my doors open for others, i want to make sure i do it right.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m currently in the beginning of starting my own business, my objective is to cover Instrument Repair/ Maintenance, Recording, and Printing Services such as CD, Stickers, and Screen Printing. The Recording and Screen Printing side of things is something i plan to have ready to go in November, but i have already started doing the Guitar Repair/ Maintenance, i started officially doing that in June and I have already had 10 clients bring in their instruments for service. My approach and business model is different than conventional studios or guitar techs, I’m currently just charging a flat rate of $20 for my services as a guitar techs, and I plan on using the same model for recording at just $20 per song rather than something like the $35 per hour that most studios charge. My goal is to be as budget friendly as I can, i know a big deterrent for a lot of young and upcoming musicians is having a means to get their music recorded in the first place. A lot of people never release their own music for that reason and that’s something that really makes me sad. Everyone should have the opportunity to create and express themselves through art.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is not financial, as long as I know I helped someone do something they might not have been able to, then that’s all I need. Creating opportunities and helping others in their craft is more important to me than a paycheck.
