Today we’d like to introduce you to SETHU GOPIDALAI.
Hi SETHU, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Photography has always been something I genuinely enjoyed, but it started as a creative outlet rather than a business. I moved to the United States from India to pursue my master’s degree in Computer Science, and eventually built a career working in data and technology. While I enjoy solving technical problems during the week, photography became the creative balance that allowed me to connect with people and tell stories in a completely different way.
When I first started, I photographed friends, family, and anyone willing to stand in front of my camera. Every session taught me something new. As my work improved, word-of-mouth referrals started bringing in more clients, and what began as a hobby slowly evolved into SG Photography.
Since my last interview, I’ve grown in ways I never expected. I’ve had the opportunity to photograph corporate events, sporting events, branding sessions, portraits, commercial products, and work with businesses, entrepreneurs, and creators throughout the Kansas City area and beyond. Every project has challenged me to become more versatile while staying true to my style.
One area that has become a huge part of my work is professional retouching. I enjoy taking a great image and refining it in a way that looks polished while still feeling natural. It’s a part of the creative process that I genuinely love.
Today, my goal is simple: create images that people are excited to share, proud to display, and able to look back on years from now. Whether it’s a business building its brand or a family celebrating a milestone, I want every client to feel that their story matters.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all-but I think that’s what has made the journey meaningful.
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing two careers. I work full-time in technology while continuing to grow my photography business during evenings, weekends, and whenever opportunities come up. It requires a lot of planning, long days, and occasionally sacrificing personal time, but it’s something I’m passionate about.
Like many photographers, I also experienced periods where bookings slowed down or where I questioned whether I was progressing quickly enough. Social media can make it seem like everyone else’s success happens overnight, but behind the scenes there’s a lot of learning, trial and error, and persistence.
Another challenge has been learning the business side of photography. Taking great photos is only part of the job. You also have to understand pricing, client communication, contracts, marketing, branding, networking, and delivering an exceptional customer experience. Those lessons don’t happen overnight.
Looking back, every obstacle has helped me improve – not just as a photographer, but as a business owner. The difficult moments taught me patience, consistency, and the importance of always investing in learning. I still consider myself a student of photography, and I hope I never stop growing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
SG Photography focuses on creating clean, timeless, and impactful imagery across several different areas. I photograph portraits, branding sessions, corporate events, headshots, commercial products, sports, and lifestyle content. While each type of photography is different, they all share the same purpose, helping people tell their story and create images they feel proud of.
Over the past year, one of the most rewarding parts of my work has been seeing how photography can impact someone’s confidence. I’ve had several clients reach out for portrait sessions not only because they wanted beautiful photographs, but because they wanted to celebrate themselves, feel more confident, and create a moment where they could truly see themselves in a positive way.
That experience has reminded me that photography is about much more than just taking a picture. It’s about creating an environment where someone feels comfortable enough to be themselves. Many clients come into a session feeling nervous or unsure because they are not used to being in front of a camera. Watching them relax throughout the session and leave feeling confident and excited about their images is one of the most fulfilling parts of what I do.
Another part of my work that I find incredibly rewarding is the opportunity to work with people from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and photograph people from many different communities, cultures, and walks of life. Every person brings their own story, traditions, personality, and perspective to a session, and I enjoy learning how to understand and represent that authentically through photography.
I think working with people from different backgrounds has also helped me grow as a photographer and as a person. It has taught me not to approach every session with the same assumptions or expectations. Every client is different, and part of my job is to listen, understand what makes them comfortable, and create an experience that feels authentic to them. That cultural diversity has been one of the most rewarding parts of building my photography business.
I’m probably best known for my attention to detail, my ability to connect with clients, and my retouching. I believe editing should enhance an image while still preserving what makes someone unique. The goal is never to create an unrealistic version of someone – it is to bring out the best version of them while keeping the image natural and authentic.
Something I’m especially proud of is the trust and relationships I’ve built with my clients. Many of the reviews I’ve received mention not only the quality of the photographs but also the overall experience, how comfortable, confident, and welcomed they felt during their session. One of the most meaningful compliments I hear is that clients who were initially nervous felt relaxed and enjoyed the entire process.
Over the past year, I’ve also had the opportunity to expand my work into corporate events, sports, products, restaurants, creators, and branding projects. Each assignment challenges me in a different way and helps me continue growing as a photographer.
What sets me apart is that I don’t see photography as simply delivering images. I focus on creating an experience where people feel valued, comfortable, and confident. The final photographs are important, but the memories and emotions created during the process are just as meaningful. I believe the best images happen when there is trust between the photographer and the person in front of the camera.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I don’t think of myself as someone who takes reckless risks. I believe in taking calculated risks – ones that are backed by preparation, hard work, and a willingness to learn.
Moving from India to the United States was probably the biggest risk I’ve ever taken. I left behind everything familiar to pursue higher education and build a new life. That decision ultimately opened doors to both my technology career and my photography journey.
Starting a photography business while working full-time was another risk. It meant investing in equipment, education, software, and countless hours without knowing exactly how quickly the business would grow. There were moments when it would have been easier to stay comfortable, but I believed that if I kept improving my craft and treated every client professionally, opportunities would eventually follow.
Today, I still take calculated risks by reaching out to businesses, brands, models, and creatives I’d love to work with. Sometimes those conversations don’t lead anywhere, but other times they open doors that never would have existed if I hadn’t taken the initiative.
I’ve learned that growth usually lives just outside your comfort zone. You don’t have to take the biggest leap overnight – you just have to keep taking the next step forward. Over time, those small, consistent risks add up to something much bigger.
