Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Rebeck.
Hi Robert, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My start in music production probably happened when I was 6 years old and playing with my parents’ tape recorder. My friends and I used to record skits and songs we made up. I started singing and playing instruments a little later, and then eventually grew to have an interest in music recording. I attended Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts in 1992-1993 and then went to work at a studio named Mercy Record Studio in Lawrence. I eventually ended up at Chapman Recording in Kansas City in 2001 and worked there until 2017. I now work as a freelance audio engineer/producer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely had it’s pitfalls, but overall the music industry has treated me pretty well. Making money at anything creative is always a challenge, and that has always been the struggle to live as an audio engineer in a small market. For me it has required more dedication and more hours to make ends meet. I have also learned to wear many hats and provide many services as it makes it easier to make money.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
These days my work is primarily music mixing. I still do some in-person recording sessions here and there, but primarily people send me their tracks over the internet, and I mix them and send them back. I also create musical elements (production) for some clients. For example, I may add a guitar part or keyboard to an existing track. I’ve even been known to do occasional vocal work. I’m probably most proud of the projects where I was able to contribute on several levels, i.e. recording, mixing, production, and mastering. I would say my varied skill set sets me apart from others in my field.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I don’t really listen to hip-hop music outside of the work I am doing, even though I am known for it. I grew up on rock and roll and my listening tastes still reside there.
