Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Williams.
Hi Dustin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A passion for hunting and the outdoors led to studying wildlife habitat management at the University of Missouri. From there I found a job with a habitat contractor in Kansas where I worked for 3 years and gained a true passion for restoring native ecosystems within forest, riparian and prairie settings. I gained further experience working with the Kansas Forest Service and Department of Wildlife and Parks. Today Habitat Works assists landowners in developing a plan to improve habitat for Whitetail Deer, wild turkey, quail, pheasant, and all native species alike. Controlled burns, forest management, invasive species removal are all within the scope of plan writing, and sometimes completed work we provide.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The primary struggle has been finding a way to excel in all aspects of habitat management. Things can be very conditionally dependent, and the weather is far from dependable. This has led me, however, to narrow the scope of work I perform hands on, and help folks get in contact with the appropriate resources to execute management techniques to achieve their goals.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a habitat manager. I specialize in property consultation assisting landowners achieve quality habitat for a variety of wildlife species. This is predominantly upland habitat to boost landowner’s whitetail deer and wild turkey hunting experience, but also includes pollinator habitat, and other wildlife native to our Missouri ecosystems reap the benefit of the work. I specialize in prescribed fire implementation, and timber stand improvement, as far as hands on work goes.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is helping landowners use a wholistic approach to habitat management. This includes implementing prescribed fire, sustainable timber harvest, regenerative agricultural practices, water conservation practices, and invasive species management. I think far too many people are in land ownership solely for financial gain, and do not consider the systems and organisms that called our land home before we had the opportunity to own it.
