Today we’d like to introduce you to Lane Coursen.
Hi Lane, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Momento really grew out of three things that have always been important to me: dignity for seniors, a love of vintage treasures, and a desire to reduce waste while giving back to the community.
Before starting Momento, I spent several years working for other estate sale companies throughout Central and Southern California. I genuinely loved helping families during what is often a major life transition, but I also saw how much ended up being thrown away to meet timelines or boost profit margins.
I saw an opportunity for a more conscious and considered approach to estate clearing.
In 2022, I founded Momento to bring that vision to life. My goal has always been to make these transitions easier for families while honoring the stories behind their possessions, reducing unnecessary waste, and supporting the community along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, but spending four years working for other estate sale companies gave me the chance to learn the business and make a lot of my mistakes before starting Momento. That experience really prepared me for the challenges of running my own company.
That’s one piece of advice I’d give anyone wanting to start a business is to find great mentors in your industry and learn from both their successes and their mistakes.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What really sets Momento apart is our commitment to reducing waste. Instead of filling dumpsters, we take the extra time to make sure items end up where they’re truly needed. Old or stained linens go to the local humane society because the dogs don’t care if the towels are stained. Unused greeting cards are donated to a senior pen pal program, children’s items go to an orphanage we work with in Tijuana, mobility aids are donated to a program that loans them to people in need, office supplies find new homes in local schools, etc.
What I’m most proud of is the reputation we’ve built for being compassionate, honest, and thoughtful. Families invite us into their homes during some of the hardest days of their lives, and that trust means everything to us. I’m so honored to receive feedback from our clients that they can tell that we genuinely care about honoring their family member by finding meaningful homes for the things they owned.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I no longer live in Kansas City, but I am from and will always love KC. I especially miss the good BBQ!
