Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Gordon.
Hi Mya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been behind the camera since high school, and I’ve been in love with photography ever since. There’s something so special about capturing genuine moments and turning them into memories that last a lifetime.
Before becoming a full-time photographer, I was a kindergarten teacher. I absolutely loved teaching, but after my daughter was born, I knew it was time for a new chapter. While I was teaching, I photographed on the side. My husband encouraged me to take the leap and pursue photography full-time, and I’m so grateful he gave me the push I needed.
For the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of capturing families, couples, seniors, weddings, and all of life’s beautiful milestones full-time—and I can honestly say I love every minute of it. There’s nothing better than meeting amazing people, telling their stories, and creating memories they’ll treasure for years to come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting started wasn’t always easy—and honestly, running a business still comes with its challenges. When I first decided to pursue photography full-time, we were living in Arkansas. Not long after launching my business, our family moved to Kansas City, which meant I had to start all over again.
One of the best decisions I ever made was reaching out to photographers for mentorship. While I was in Arkansas, I found a mentor who introduced me to classes and resources that helped me build a strong foundation. After moving to Kansas City, I was fortunate enough to connect with another incredible photographer who took me under her wing.
What started as a mentorship has grown into one of my closest friendships. Her willingness to share her knowledge, encourage me, and teach me both the art of photography and the business behind it has been truly life-changing. She played a huge role in helping me build the business I have today, and I’m so grateful for her guidance.
That experience taught me the importance of investing in education, building relationships, and never being afraid to ask for help. Those lessons continue to shape both my business and the experience I provide for every client.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a family and wedding photographer based in the Kansas City area, and my biggest goal is to create photos that feel like *you*. I want my sessions to be fun, relaxed, and full of genuine moments instead of stiff poses. Some of my favorite images are the ones that happen in between the “perfect” shots—the laughs, hugs, happy tears, and little moments that tell your story.
Before photography, I was a kindergarten teacher, and I think that shaped the way I work more than anything. It taught me patience, how to connect with people quickly, and how to make others feel comfortable. Whether I’m photographing a shy toddler, a nervous groom, or a senior who doesn’t love being in front of the camera, I want everyone to leave feeling confident and like they had a great experience.
What I’m most proud of is the relationships I’ve built along the way. So many of my clients have become friends, and I’ve had the honor of photographing some families year after year as they grow. That means so much to me.
I think what sets me apart is that I truly care about the people I’m photographing. I’m not just there to deliver a gallery of beautiful images—I’m there to celebrate your story, make you feel comfortable, and create an experience that’s just as meaningful as the photos themselves.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Don’t be afraid to reach out. I know it can feel intimidating, but one message can change everything. I asked photographers I admired if they’d mentor me, and that decision helped shape both my business and my confidence. Focus on building genuine relationships—you never know where they might lead.
