Community Highlights: Meet Ashley Tezon of Back to Basics Organic Home Market

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Tezon.

Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
What started as a simple and rather popular idea of sharing bread with neighbors; has now transformed into a family affair of providing for our community in a wholesome, decent and honest way.

I believe the destination has become the journey we are on.

My daughters have learned to bake cookies to be able to pay for their foreign language program. They also use their proceeds from selling cookies to buy beads to then create jewelry for others to wear. They shop for inventory in a responsible way, knowing the unit rates and profit margin. They are learning that the details matter and quality is essential.

They also see the late nights that I stay up to mix dough, sweep the floor, and let’s not forget the piles of bowls needing to be washed in a house that has no dishwasher. As a mother who cooks everything from scratch, operating a micro bakery out of my home can be quite the feat with 7 mouths to feed. I quite literally live in my kitchen.

My hope for them is that they are learning the value of hard work and how that hard work brings life to those around them.

If you have ever supported my organic home market whether that be cheering me on from miles away, ordering sourdough bread, gifting my handcrafted soap for a special occasion, taking a sourdough bread class, or even wearing my daughter’s handmade jewelry; just know that your support in our organic home market does not go unnoticed.

Our family is grateful for the unseen roots taking hold (for us and for you) and the opportunity to serve our community in a wholesome, decent and honest way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am a wife and mom of five young children, so many of the unseen obstacles have been juggling the needs of the house with the demands of the business.

However, not am I only thankful to have the support of my husband, but also to have the support of my friends who operate an organic farm in Lethbridge, Canada. They are experts in organic farming and living, (the way The Lord has intended for us all to live), so any questions I have had along the way with running a small business and the how to’s; they have been there for counsel which has alleviated many of the expected obstacles along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of Back to Basics Organic Home Market . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Over two years ago I started out baking organic sourdough bread for my family, friends and immediate neighbors. It has now grown into a weekly market where I’ve expanded my inventory and my neighbor base. I am beyond thankful for the positive impact it has had on our community.

Every Thursday I operate my Organic Home Market: Back to Basics in front of my home from 3PM- 5PM.

I have an online menu in which each Friday my pre-orders for my market open. Customers have until Tuesday PM to order for that Thursday pick up. I often have extra baked items that I set out a little earlier on Thursday pick up days. Items sell quickly, so pre-ordering is most definitely recommended.

Not only do I bake a variety of sourdough products but I also have many handcrafted items available weekly ranging from granola, tea and even an organic skin care line which includes soap, tallow face cream and tallow deodorant. I’ve also been adding handmade ceramics and fresh produce from my backyard garden as well. My daughters are also participating as they bake cookies and make jewelry for sale.

Everything I prepare is always organic, beautifully packaged and good for you!

In a world where “health” has become so convoluted, I believe healthy living doesn’t need to be complicated. Which is why I believe we should get back to basics nourishing ourselves, family and community.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Consistency and patience.
