Check Out Kyra Summers’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Summers.

Hi Kyra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a keen ability for organizing and planning, and creating beautiful things has been a favorite pastime of mine for as long as I can remember. For many years, I planned and executed events for close friends and family: baby showers, anniversary parties, wedding showers, luncheons, etc. I really enjoyed planning these family-centered celebratory events. Those close to me recognized my passion and skills in this area and encouraged me to explore a career in event planning. I worked with a friend of a friend in the industry for a Summer and realized planning and executing weddings would be a perfect fit for me. In 2019, I started A Summers’ Day to pursue my passion for putting together stunning events.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! I spent the first year building systems, planning marketing strategies, and learning the ins and outs of the industry. Weddings are a whole new ballgame compared to small events, so even though I was passionate, I had a lot to learn. It took a lot of time, money, and focus to get started, and I didn’t see the fruit of that labor for many years. On top of that, right after booking my first few clients, the Covid epidemic hit and threw a snag in all those events. Not only was I still figuring out my processes, but I was also required to coordinate with the city, stay on top of new restrictions, and facilitate those in the events that were allowed to be put on. Many events had to be rescheduled, which pushed back payments and made the first few years difficult. It took about 3 years to get firmly established. Now things are much easier to maintain.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in planning and executing weddings. Most of the clients I work with have never put on an event of this nature before and don’t know where to begin. I am very detail-oriented and have a good mind for putting all the details together to bring to fruition the vision they have for their event. Although I don’t claim to be a true artist, I have always had a knack for recreating projects and designs that I’ve seen elsewhere. My specialty is using the inspiration my clients bring to me, as well as their unique style, to create something new that fits their budgets and exceeds their expectations.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Systems are your lifeline! Whether you create your own or utilize one already in existence, it is a must before getting started. Your clients will expect you to know and keep track of every detail of their event and be able to answer a question in a snap. It’s also imperative to make sure nothing slips through the cracks. This requires systems to track all the vendor information, what is pending with each vendor, vendor payments, timelines, logistics, meeting times, who is supplying what, and what remains for the client to purchase. There are a lot of spinning plates that are impossible to keep up with without tried-and-true processes.
