Today we’d like to introduce you to Devonte Mallory.
Hi Devonte, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for fitness was cultivated through my participation in athletics and sports growing up. I ended up heading to University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a preferred walk-on (PWO) in 2013, where my track career didn’t go as planned. Ultimately, leading me to contemplate the “next steps” of my life. Upon leaving UNL, I returned home to Kansas City for a short time before choosing to join the Army in 2015. After my time in service, I dealt with some physical and mental health issues (anxiety, depressive disorder and suicidal ideations/attempts) that sparked curiosity on how to improve my conditions during that period.
I found an exercise science program that allowed me to fast track and become certified within my field as I was also getting the knowledge and understanding of human movement, patterns, physiology and performance. Using myself, “client 00” as I would refer to myself, I began to come up with a set of goals that I wanted to improve the metrics of. I became more mobile, gained weight, and my thought life became healthier. I also noticed that I had gotten stronger and more disciplined than I’d ever been. I began to apply the things I was studying by picking up clients while in school to bring my textbook to life. I simply wanted other’s to experience the same clarity and freedom that I discovered through exercise. This led me to start my personal fitness brand and business Discipline Over Complacency LLC. in 2024. Where my mission is to empower others to reclaim their mind and body through exercise.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been plenty of complications along the way! In my opinion, anything deemed worth it, you continue to persevere through all emotions and trials. As I was building clientele I aimed to get into local gyms before working at Genesis Health Clubs. Having no success building new clientele at GHC, as well as struggling to bring the few clients I accumulated at the school gym, I decided to transfer into sales working my way to Assistant General Manager within a year.
As great as it sounds, I begin to work long hours on top of training, building my brand, attending school , and dealing with my second child’s NICU experience. I began to experience burnout at a high level but I am always determined to make the best of my situations.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a certified personal trainer specializing in corrective exercise, behavior change and sports performance. I am known to improve mobility, strength training for runners and athletes, as well as a total health approach involving thought-journaling as a form of metrics of improvement. Kansas City’s People Choice Award Finalist for Best Fitness Trainer 2026.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In all honesty, I’m not as big of a risk taker as I aspire to be. I have taken risks in the past that were not calculated. Some things worked, others did not. As with all risk taking!
I’ve been positioning myself to take my next big steps within the fitness world, with more thought and analysis informing those risks. More to be disclosed in the future, follow me on Instagram @docmallory to see the journey unfold.
