Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Jensen.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Lindsey Jensen and I am a 500-hour certified yoga teacher and fitness instructor who has been teaching since 2019. I am originally from Westchester, New York, an hour north of New York City. I relocated to Kansas City for my husband’s assignment as a pilot in the United States Air Force. I graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Cognitive Science and concentration in Neuroscience with the initial goal of becoming a physician. It wasn’t until I was enrolled in my first year of medical school at New York Medical College that I discovered my passion for a more holistic and preventative approach to health and wellness. I ultimately changed course, turning focus to integrative and fitness-based modalities like yoga and strength training. I believe that the combination of the two, alongside a growth mentality, is the key to lifelong success and wellbeing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey to where I am now was certainly not linear and not one without adversity. Prior to enrolling at the University of Virginia (UVA), I spent the first part of my collegiate career at American University in Washington, D.C., and then spent a year teaching English as a foreign language in Madrid, Spain. I transferred to UVA with the goal of pursuing pre-medicine and subsequently spent my post baccalaureate finishing pre-requisite courses, studying for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), applying to medical schools, and working tirelessly waiting tables and being an emergency room medical scribe. Spending so many years of hard work, money, and time to get into medical school made leaving medical school that much more personal and painful of a decision. Within that first year, I unexpectedly realized that the healthcare and medical education system were not aligning with me personally. I had to not only let go of the pursuit of becoming a physician, but also let go of the life I thought I was going to have as a future doctor. In hindsight, leaving the medical field was the best decision I have ever made. Becoming a yoga and fitness instructor, (and now a business owner), has provided me with a tremendous platform to serve others from a much more authentic and aligned place. Through these moments of introspection, I have learned to frame obstacles as detours in the right direction. I can either choose to view these obstacles as failures or as opportunities to grow. Consciously choosing the latter has changed my life for the better!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My mission is to help people live more active, happier, and healthier lives. My unique academic background in medicine and neuroscience, in conjunction with my robust experience in the yoga and fitness industry, sets my business apart. I offer reiki (little to no touch energy healing), private 1:1 yoga/fitness sessions, small group classes, and large group classes. In addition, I host local events and workshops around the Kansas City area as well as provide consultations for fellow yoga and fitness instructors. My teaching style not only emphasizes efficiency, safety, and proper alignment, but also illustrates the core principle of my business and my life – a growth mindset. Every class I lead is paired with a thoughtful intention that I am striving towards at the time – a lesson I wish to impart to myself and to my students long after we step off our mats. Mindful movement is the key to longevity and success. If you can change your mindset, you can change your life.
What makes you happy?
Knowing that I have positively impacted someone’s life – big or small – makes me happy. Whether it’s introducing a student to their new favorite song, helping someone become physically stronger, or positively reframing one’s perspective on an issue that has been troubling them, I find great joy in uplifting and serving others. A rising tide raises all ships.
